They are school mates, roommates and also the fiercest of rivals on the court.

But when Sydney duo Aimee Jin and Valentyna Rosa come together, they are force to be reckoned with.

The Meriden School pair have emerged into the quarter-finals of the girls Under-14s doubles at the Junior Claycourt Nationals in Canberra after a big win over Victorian pair Taylor Burke and Elise Verr on Thursday.

What made the emphatic straight-sets win even better for the pair, was that less than 24 hours earlier they had squared off in the singles, with Jin squeezing her way past Rosa in a three-set thriller.

It’s not the first time the pair have gone from singles rivals to doubles teammates in the same tournament, and it is their friendship off the court that is key to overcoming the competitive edge.

“I think if were training for the doubles before a singles game, it’s just about not trying to kill each other,” Jin laughed.

“Once we are on even ground on the same side of the net, we try and keep it light and play off that tension. We crack a joke or two and then move on to focus on the doubles.”

Rosa said communication between the pair was key, and although she missed out on reaching the quarter-finals in the singles draw, the cool-headed teenager said keeping their quest for a doubles title alive was the next best thing.

“Once we saw the draw, I knew I wasn’t able to talk to her before our singles clash,” Rosa said.

“But once that game was over with, we go straight into the doubles mode together. It wasn’t the result I wanted, but I knew I had to put that behind me to get the best out of our teamwork. That is the beauty of tennis, it is a journey.

“We need to make sure we are talking to each other. As soon as communication goes down and we lose that connection on court, that is when the mistakes start to happen.”

The doubles and singles quarter-finals will take over the show court on Friday, as the Junior Claycourt Nationals go into the pointy end of the tournament.
