PREVIEW

A desire to follow in her older brother’s footsteps has led Tuggeranong local Amelia Stichbury to the heights of BMX racing.

The 14-year-old has been all over the world competing against the best of the best, but what drives her to success is very simple.

“I love the adrenaline it brings,” Stichbury said.

“It’s a lot of training and hard work, but you get rewarded at the end.”

Stichbury will be gunning for another title at the ACT Territory Championships on Sunday, with KommunityTV to showcase the races LIVE and EXCLUSIVE from 9.30am.

Stichbury has a great record in Australia, consistently placing at the top of her age group and holding her own against older girls.

“I’ve come first in Australia three times,” Stichbury said.

“So I’ve come up against the best in the country and I’ve beaten them for three years in a row.

“Sadly, I couldn’t compete last year because I broke my collarbone in practice.”

Her love of racing has seen her compete against the best international riders at the World Championships, where she placed fifth at the most recent edition in France in 2022 when she was just 12-years-old.

Stichbury is set to fly to South Carolina in May for this year’s championships, but despite getting to race at some of the best tracks in the world, Stichbury said it’s hard to go past one track as her favourite.

“My favourite track to race is probably still Tuggeranong,” she said.

“I know the track really well and it’s where I started.”

With only a handful of girls her age competing in BMX racing, Stichbury said she is often mixing it with the boys.

“I like going up against the boys because there’s usually more riders, so there’s more competition,” she said.

“You know you can’t slack off against the boys, they’ll give you stuff and you’ve just got to get it back.”
