Hawks have made it five wins on the bounce after blowing past a luckless Peninsula Waves on Wednesday night.

Challenged by the Waves – still searching for their first Victorian Netball League win of 2025 – the Hawks put together a blistering 21-6 third quarter to set up the 77-41 victory.

Both Championship and 23&U VNL clashes were exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV.

Waves charged out of the gates, taking the Hawks by surprise as they turned opportunistic defence into scoring at the other end.

Scores were level at 18 a piece the first change and the bottom-ranked side outplayed their ladder position early into the second quarter as Emmalia Blake and Samantha Gooden took advantage in attack.

But as the game wore on the class of the Hawks began to shine through.

Star shooter Ash Mawer (47 goals) went to work in the circle to finish off good work from the likes of Keighley Starrett and Jessica Tetley.

The Waves’ seventh-consecutive defeat was further soured by a knee injury to Gooden, who had only recently worked her way back from a stint on the sidelines.

In the 23&U clash, a fifth versus seventh clash lived up to the closeness between the two sides as Hawks edged Peninsula Wave 46-43 in a thrilling back and forth contest.

PREVIEW

While Peninsula Waves might be winless through six games, coach Matt Cooke is seeing plenty of positives from his side.

The Waves entered the 2025 Victorian Netball League season with a refreshed look as the Championship squad experienced a high player turnover.

They’ll enter Wednesday night’s clash against the Hawks, which will be live streamed on KommunityTV, looking to cause an upset.

It’s a short turnaround for a Waves side who played on Sunday, going down to the Casey Demons.

Cooke said the key for his side was putting together a complete four quarter performance.

“It’s five or six-minute moments in games which are our challenge. We just drop off for a little bit but the signs are good,” he said.

“We set ourselves a realistic goal at the start of the season, we didn’t put a ceiling on our goals, but this is all about the long-term.

“We brought in six or seven players from other clubs. The way they play is at a Championship level.

“Once we get ourselves across the line, the confidence is going to grow in those 50-50 games and hopefully we can break through soon.”

The Waves’ faced significant challenges before the start of the season when star signing Mwai Kumwenda joined Super Netball powerhouse the West Coast Fever as an injury replacement player.

They had been building their court structure around the former international netballer.

Samantha Godden has returned to the court in recent weeks, making her Waves debut in Round 5.

The shooter has been working her way back from injuries suffered while playing footy.

“Sam has been a good addition to the team with her experience,” Cooke said.

“We’re hoping to get some more mileage in the legs. Ella Roberton is making her way back from an ACL injury and we’re hoping to see her later in the season.

“Our under-23s are quite strong and there’s some impressive players in our junior teams. We’ve got very good depth and we’re taking time to develop our own players, not go after players from other clubs.

“We’ve got the extra players, it’s just about being patient and building towards the long-term future.”

The Hawks will enter Wednesday night as strong favourites with a 5-1 record with Cooke describing his side’s opponents as a “tough challenge”.

“We’ll set ourselves quarter by quarter goals,” he said.

The 23-and-under clash will be a finals-like game with Waves currently fifth on the ladder and the Hawks seventh.
