Netball SA Premier League Round 10 live stream: Contax, Matrics to write next chapter in rivalry

Netball SA Premier League arch rivals Contax and Matrics have faced off in a Friday night blockbuster. Watch the Premier and Reserves replays here.

Matrics has handed arch rival Contax its first defeat of the Netball SA Premier League season in a classy display on Friday night.

In a tense final quarter where the Blues trailed by one goal with just over a minute remaining, the Stars held firm to win 53-50.

Contax came into the match with a 9-0 win-loss record and having beaten Matrics in the opening round of the season.

However the Stars, premiers a year ago, showed their quality as they saw off a string of charges from the Blues throughout the match.

Contax remained top of the ladder despite the defeat while Matrics sit third with eight wins and two losses.

The Netball SA Premier League’s only undefeated side will look to continue their amazing form when it takes on their modern-day rival on Friday night.

Contax, last year’s runners up, have started the 2023 season on a tear and will jump out to a 10-0 start if they come out on top in the grand final rematch.

While they possess one of the strongest line-ups in the league, assistant coach Sarah Vidmar revealed the secret to their success actually lies in the players beyond their first-string starting seven.

Contax has seen major contributions from a number of areas this season, with big names Sophie Agostino, captain Chelsea Blackman, Kate Walsh. and Jessie Grenvold supported well by Jordi Vidmar and Kayla Graham.

Vidmar said the ability for every player in the Contax squad to step up when called upon had been key to the club’s strong season so far.

“It’s been a bit of a disruptive season with players coming and going, whether it be for commitments with Thunderbirds trainings or elsewhere, but we’ve been able to be flexible, which has been great,” the assistant coach said.

“Most of our players have been training with us for a while, they know the system and what is expected and their concentration has been fantastic.”

Contax came out on top against Matrics in round one of the season, with a 48-43 victory, but Vidmar was adamant Friday’s game would prove a tougher challenge.

Matrics will roll into the clash off the back of a season-stabilising demolition of Tango last week following a shock loss to fellow table toppers South Adelaide a fortnight ago.

“We’re always excited to take on Matrics, we don’t need any extra motivation – we both want the same thing on Friday night and at the end of the season, which makes for a really good match up,” Vidmar said.

Contax will look to beat Matrics for the second time this season on Friday.

“Compared to round one it’s almost like a new season. It was a really low-scoring affair last time and both teams were probably a bit messy seeing as it was the first game of the season, so we’re expecting a big challenge and, hopefully, we can be a bit cleaner.”

The double header will also include a top of the table clash in the Reserves fixture between the two proud clubs, but coincidentally it will be Matrics who have a shot at a perfect 10-0 start to the season.
