In an early contender for match of the year, South Adelaide narrowly edged out a resurgent Garville by three points to keep their impressive Netball SA Premier League season motoring along.

But it didn’t come without a scare.

Despite never leading at any stage, Garville threatened to cause a boil over throughout the final quarter, drawing even with their rivals multiple times.

But in the end it was the experience of Jess Paradiso (17 goals) and Maggie Kerr (33 goals), which helped South Adelaide close out a 50-47 win in Round 6 on Friday night.

The South Adelaide side exploded out of the blocks in the first quarter with Lauren Ross pulling the strings on a sensational attacking display to shoot out to what appeared like a comfortable seven-point lead at the first break.

But the switch of experienced defender Casey Bernhardt out of the circle proved a masterstroke from Garville coach Kirsty Leonard-Down.

Also the injection of Asher Grapes at wing attack in the second half almost turned the contest on its head as Garville answered back with a five-point run to come within one goal of stealing the lead late in the final quarter.

Garville won the final quarter 10-8, but in the end it wasn’t enough to win the match.

South Adelaide made it a perfect night on the court, sweeping the action with a gripping two-goal win in the Premier Reserves clash.

PREVIEW: Paradiso confident South Adelaide can go all the way

Star South Adelaide recruit Jessica Paradiso believes her new team is on the cusp of major success in this year’s Netball SA Premier League.

Ahead of their pivotal clash with another finals aspirant, Garville, on Friday night, the Panthers currently sit second on the ladder with a 4-1 record, their only loss coming against Contax in round four.

“It’s been a really good start for us. Personally I’ve settled well into the team and it has been nice to kick-off the season with a few solid wins,” Paradiso said.

“We’ve had to grind out a few results, but the fact we’ve been able to do that and get wins is definitely positive.”

South Adelaide secured Paradiso in the off-season, signing the reigning MVP attacker to line up next to star shooter Maggie Kerr, and the results have been immediate.

The tandem has been as damaging as any in the competition so far this year, scoring 262 goals between them.

Paradiso said she could see signs of a strong team during pre-season preparation.

“The pre-season was a tad up and down for us, but we felt like everything jelled really well in our court work and internal stuff, so there were definitely signs of what we could be,” she said.

“There is a very strong determination within the group to win after finishing strong last year.

“As far as for myself, I feel I’ve played a pretty good season so far and playing alongside Maggie has been great – she’s a brilliant player and really easy to get along with.”

Garville has also improved so far this season, impressing against Newton, Oakdale and Metro Jets, while only losing to Contax by six points for a 3-1 record so far.

“They’ve had some great wins and performed quite well from what we’ve seen so it’s going to be a big challenge,” Paradiso said.

“We’ve got to stay focused for the full four quarters, move the ball well and defend consistently.

“If we can do that this week and further into the season I think we can achieve big things.”
