While the result was all but cemented only a couple of minutes into the second quarter, Metro Jets never gave up their fight.

In the end they didn’t have enough firepower to overcome a full-strength Tango, but the young Jets can hold their heads high.

Tango, spearheaded by goal-shooting skipper Tenille Gray (28 goals), ran out 54-48 winners on Friday night, but the Jets proved the better side over the second half.

KommunityTV apologises for the connection issues which caused a disruption in the final quarter of the Premier League game. We are working to provide a full replay of the match.

In fact, taking out a first quarter in which Tango went on an 11-goal run, the Jets won the remaining three quarters 40-37.

It is likely cold comfort for the last-placed Jets heading into the final round of the season, but it will give them a strong platform to build off in the Netball SA Premier League off-season.

As she has all season, skipper Alice Gerlach tried her heart out in the back court, while Rebecca Taheny shot the lights out with 41 goals from 42 attempts.

Tango, who are out of finals contention in the Premier League, will also use the result to fill them with confidence ahead of a final round showdown with ladder leaders Contax.

The Jets exacted a level of revenge in the Reserves clash, notching their second win of the season with a strong second half showing to down Tango 51-43.

Preview: Metro Jets desperate to finish tough season in right fashion

Metro Jets will look to add just its second win of the season this Friday when it takes on Tango in a bid to move up from the bottom of the Netball SA Premier League ladder.

The Jets went through a period of major change heading into the 2023 season with a number of players departing from and arriving to the club for the year ahead.

Club captain Alice Gerlach said that while the year had been a challenging one for the new-look Jets, a win was not out of the question against a sixth-placed Tango side this week.

And you can catch all the action from the Reserves and Premier League double-header live and exclusive right here on KommunityTV from 7pm on Friday.

“I’d be lying if I said we’re not disappointed with only having the one win but I’d say it’s been a frustrating but also positive season,” Gerlach said.

“We haven’t managed to chalk up the results we’d like but overall a lot of our players are still coming together as a unit and still learning so there is a lot of room for growth.

“Most of the season has been about coming together as a group, learning from our mistakes and putting a consistent performance together so I think if we can do that we can get a win this week.”

The club’s one win this year came against Newton Jaguars in round eight of but Gerlach’s team could not repeat that effort last week, going down to the Jags by seven goals.

She said the loss was another chance for the group to learn.

“The first half of that game I remember saying to the team “how fun is this?”, we were playing some great netball but for whatever reason we dropped off a bit and they capitalised on our mistakes,” Gerlach said.

“We definitely took a lot away from that game and we know we’re going to need to be more consistent this week in what will be a tough game against Tango.

“We still take confidence into the game, we’ve prepared really well and we’re working on synergy going forward because we know our defence is strong and that we’re going to get our opportunities in attack.”

Gerlach said a win in the last two weeks of the season would mean the world to the Jets.

“It would honestly mean so much to be able to get a win this week. Winning isn’t everything but it definitely makes it so much more enjoyable.

“We desperately want to win to prove we’re on the right track and hopefully take that momentum into next season – we all saw what the Thunderbirds did finishing last a year ago and then winning this year, we want to emulate that.”
