It wasn’t perfect, but it was a great way to tune up ahead of finals for the South Adelaide side.

The Panthers purred into the post-season with a comfortable 66-38 win over bottom-placed Metro Jets in the final round of the Netball SA Premier League season.

South Adelaide set up the landslide win with a sublime second quarter, outscoring their rivals 21-6 in a thrilling passage of play.

But the intensity fell away in the back end of the contest as the Panthers used the second half as a chance to rotate their squad and provide much-needed game time to their bench players ahead of the finals.

Captain Maggie Kerr continued her stellar season on the courts, shooting 27 goals from 29 attempts before she was put on ice midway through the third quarter.

She was well supported in the shooting circle by Jess Paradiso who scored 24 goals despite her radar being off after halftime.

Rachel Redden (14) and Emily Laird (1) also tasted plenty of action in the final round game, proving themselves capable of being called upon in the finals.

It was a tough way to bow out of an even tougher season for the Metro Jets, who finished the year with only one win.

But their young squad will certainly be better for the experience come next season, having discovered a capable shooter in Rebecca Taheny who finished the game with 25 goals.

South Adelaide will play a smarting Garville in next week’s elimination final, after their rivals finished the season with a 62-45 loss to the second-placed Matrics.

Matrics will meet modern rivals Contax in the qualifying final next Friday, with the winner progressing to the grand final on Saturday, August 12.

The Panthers reserves side piled on the punishment for the young Jets with a dominant 65-39 win in the second match of the double header.

The win shored up South Adelaide’s spot in the reserves finals, with a semi-final clash against Contax looming on the horizon.

Preview: South Adelaide determined to shake off loss to Garville

A one-goal defeat to their opponent for the first week of the finals hasn’t dampened the enthusiasm of South Adelaide.

The Panthers, who can’t be knocked off from third-place on the SA Premier League Netball ladder, went down to fourth-placed Garville last week.

While the two sides will meet again in a little over a week’s time, for now South Adelaide will be determined to make that loss a distant memory in their final round clash against Metro Jets.

Friday night’s SA Netball double header will be live streamed exclusively on KommunityTV, with the Premier League action getting underway from 7pm followed by the reserves at 8.35pm.

While the loss to Garville last week won’t mean much in the finals landscape, it did give the Panthers a chance to road test some fresh concepts ahead of the post-season.

Club assistant coach Jackie Blyth said the team was raring to go after last week’s result.

“We more used the game against Garville to have a look at some things and experiment a bit but that isn’t to say we aren’t disappointed with the result,” Blyth said.

“We’ve got some hard calls to make for the game this week due to some girls having a few niggles but we’re definitely looking to have a good win with whichever team we put out.

“You don’t want to be going into finals after a loss.”

The Jets have struggled this season and sit bottom of the ladder having only registered one win.

But according to Blyth, season records meant little when going into a game against the Jets.

“You never want to underestimate teams in any situation,” she said.

“This is their last game of the season and they’ll want to be going out with a bang.

“It’s a good chance for us to play a tough game and get a win to build some momentum through the next couple weeks.”

While South Adelaide will finish in a similar position to last season, the club has added some major talent through this campaign headlined by reigning league MVP Jess Paradiso.

Blyth believed the team could go all the way this year if it remained fit.

“I think this year’s team is capable of beating anyone on its day.

“I think other teams know that as well, we’re no longer taken lightly and that is a very good sign of where we’re headed.

“We know it’s a gradual grind and we know how tough the task ahead is but we’ll all be ready for finals and can be a force to be reckoned with.”
