It was so close yet so far for the Newton Jaguars as their winless streak continued in the Netball SA Premier League.

The Jaguars lost 66-55 to Tango but for large parts of the game it looked likely to end their drought.

The young side got the better of Tango early, leading by two goals at the first change before leading by five at the main break.

At times the team led by more than half a dozen goals as the young side showed the future is bright.

Newton goal shooter Amber Zalupka had the best game of her young career, leading the attack well.

But as fatigue set in, Tango bounced back, storming back in the second half.

After only scoring 27 goals in the first half, Tango added 39 in the second half, to comeback and run away with the contest in the final term.

Tango outscored their opponents 20-8 to secure an 11-goal win.

Zalupka ended up with 36 goals for Newton with Jacoba Clough leading all players with 41 goals for Tango.

The win was Tango’s fourth for the season, but it’s unlikely to keep them in the hunt for finals with only a couple of weeks remaining.

RESERVES

Tango made it two-from-two on the night beating Newton 54-38 in the reserves clash in the Netball SA league.

Like the Premier outfit earlier in the night, Tango were able to overcome a spirited challenge from the young Newton team, to prevail in the contest.

After scores were level at quarter time, 10-10, Tango took charge of the contest, outscoring Newton 44-28 to win.

Tango goal shooter Kyla-jo Dudojc scored 42 goals for the night to be the leading player for them.

The win moves Tango to four wins and seven losses for the year and sixth on the ladder.

It keeps them within striking distance of finals with Metro Jets, in fourth, having the same record.

PREVIEW

The winless Newton Jaguars are as hungry as ever for their first victory this week as they prepare to take on an improved Tango side in Wednesday night Netball SA Premier League action.

The young Jaguars, who had six players aged under 20 in last week’s loss to Garville, sit at the bottom of the ladder with an 0-10 record but have been improving each week under coach Lee-Anne Cummins.

You can watch all the action from the Premier League and Reserves double header LIVE and EXCLUSIVE right here on The Advertiser site and Kommunity TV.

Cummins said she was confident her side could get a result against Tango after losing to their opponent by just two goals last time around.

“We were in positions to win the last game against Tango but we made critical errors at the wrong times, so hopefully we can be a bit cleaner this time,” Cummins said.

“We think we matchup pretty well with them and we’re expecting a tough contest but we’ve had Contax and Garville in our last two games so hopefully that puts us in good stead for this week.”

Jaguars lost to Garville by 20 goals last week but showed major improvement across the court after losing to the same opponent by 45 in round three.

Cummins said that while the team had experienced injuries, the opportunity to play a young side would bode well for improvement into the future.

“We were quite pleased with the result and the effort the girls put out,” she said.

“We’ve lost some players to injuries but we’ve been able to blood some young players as well which has been great.

“We’re definitely hungry for that first win, no one wants to go through a season and say they didn’t win a game, but we know it’s a learning journey as well.

“A win on Wednesday would be amazing and give the girls the belief they need going forward.”

Tango, who sit sixth on the ladder with three wins and seven losses, are coming off of a close two-goal win over Metro Jets last week.

Coach Andrew Plenty said the tough, grind-out win would benefit the team.

“It was a very close affair and a very physical game and it definitely took its toll on the players throughout the game but it was a positive win because we showed we don’t give up and can fight for a win after being down,” Plenty said.

“We’re expecting another tough contest on Wednesday night, Jaguars are building really well under Lee-Anne and are going to be hungry for a win.

“I’m confident we can get a result – we’ve done some good work this week and our work rate has continued to go through the roof.”
