It all came down to a frantic final few seconds.

Matrics are back in the Netball SA Premier League grand final - but they were given a major scareby South Adelaide, who came awfully close to creating a bit of history for themselves.

Matrics will play arch rivals Contax in next Saturday night’s decider after their 52-51 preliminary final win. It’s a repeat of the 2022 grand final won so impressively by Matrics.

But there were times late on against the Panthers where their season was seriously under threat.

With the scores locked at 51-51 with 40 seconds left, the Panthers had the chance to take the lead. But they turned over possession, effectively giving Matrics the last shot - and they made no mistake with five seconds left.

Matrics entered the final quarter with 41-37 advantage, but they just couldn’t shake off their opponents.

The margin blew out to five goals early before South Adelaide, as they had done for most of the night, charged back.

They finally drew level with four minutes to go, but crucially, couldn’t take the lead. The teams went goal for goal over a thrilling finale before Matrics stepped up when it mattered most.

South Adelaide will aim to make history when it takes on Matrics in this season’s Netball SA Premier League preliminary final on Friday night.

The club’s first ever Premier League grand final appearance in its 21-year history will be up for grabs if it can defeat the competition’s reigning premier.

The Panthers booked a spot in the preliminary final with a strong win over Garville last week, while Matrics went down to rival Contax.

“We were happy with how we took their best and pushed forward to extend the lead in that game,” star attacker Jess Paradiso said.

“We attacked the ball really hard and caused a lot of turnover, which is what the best teams do, so we were pleased with that.

“We’re really excited for the preliminary final now and ready to go.”

South Adelaide has won one and lost one against Matrics this season, providing the club with a good opportunity to prepare ahead of tomorrow’s blockbuster clash.

Paradiso said she was confident the team could perform to its best and make history for the club.

“We have focused a bit on what their strengths have been this year but we’re also dedicating a lot of time to what we do best because we know we can win if we’re on top of our game.” she said.
