After being blown out of the water early in its two finals, Woodville-West Torrens is targeting a fast start in Saturday’s under-18 Torrens University Cup grand final against minor premier Glenelg at Adelaide Oval.
The Eagles spotted the Tigers a 50-point halftime lead in the second semi-final before losing by 52 points and West Adelaide a 26-point quarter-time advantage in the preliminary final before rebounding to earn another crack at Glenelg.
But they know another slow start will likely spell doom in the grand final, given the Tigers’ strong form this season.
“We need to be up and about early this week,’’ said Eagles captain Jordan Lukac, whose side turned the preliminary final on its head after the first break to win by 31 points.
“The same thing’s happened two weeks in a row – our slow starts – so we need to be lower, harder and stronger at the footy from the beginning and try to play the game on our terms.
“It’s make or break now and while Glenelg has been the strongest team all season, we know our best footy can beat anyone.’’

Lukac is one of the keys to the game, having kicked seven goals in the Eagles’ two finals, including five against the Bloods in a matchwinning display.
The key forward is among a handful of Eagles players in line to be drafted this year.
But the club was dealt a savage blow on the eve of the grand final when Port Adelaide father-son prospect Jase Burgoyne, who Lukac described as “a great player with great skills’’, was ruled out through soreness.
Despite Burgoyne’s absence being significant, hard-as-nails Glenelg skipper Hugh Stagg said his side was expecting a strong Eagles response and that it would take a team effort to back up the Tigers’ convincing semi-final win.
“We got a lot of confidence out of that first final but grand finals are completely different and it will depend on what mindset we bring on the day,’’ he said.
“The Eagles will come as a different side to what they were in the first quarter a couple of weeks ago, so we are going to have to be on our game early.
“We don’t have too many stars and will be relying on everyone playing their roles and applying pressure on the opposition.’’
The powerfully-built Stagg is certainly on AFL clubs’ recruiting radar, along with Glenelg teammates Lewis Rayson and Cooper Beecken.
The game starts at 12.10pm and will be played as a curtain-raiser to the league first semi-final between Norwood and South Adelaide.
