Spencer Prior has a problem other coaches can only dream of.

The former Premier League defender, and now one of the NSW Metro U16 coaches, has too many star players.

Five of his players set to feature at the National Youth Championships, which start on Tuesday in Wollongong, have only recently returned from Indonesia with the Joeys, where they won the ASEAN U16 Boys Championship.

Despite the international success, Prior said the boys’ priority is to bring a trophy home for their state.

CHAMPS SIMPLE PHILOSOPHY FOR TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS

“It definitely is (their priority),” Prior said.

“Because they know they should have won it last year and they didn’t, so they want to go out there and make things right.”

The team’s preparation for the tournament has been almost ‘non-existent’ due to the Joeys’ schedule.

Niko Alfaro, Jordan Graoroski, Haine Eames, Marco Satangelo and goalkeeper Jai Ajanovic were all part of the Joeys squad, and a further eight players are backing up from last year’s NSW White U15 team, who narrowly missed out on a grand final berth.

“It’s a really weird scenario,” Prior said.

“Sometimes you want to be able to challenge the boys to do some different stuff, but it’s hard when you don’t have any prep and you’re going into a tournament.

“But they are an adaptable group and a really close group, and they’re chomping at the bit given that they didn’t get to the final last year.”

The NYC will be Prior’s return to coaching since he left APIA Leichhardt at the end of the 2023 season, after winning the women’s premiership and inaugural Sapphire Cup.

“I’ve actually quite enjoyed the break to be honest with you,” Prior admitted.

“I was asked ‘obviously you’ve not been doing anything, do you want to come and do this?’ and I thought it would be good to go and test myself.

“I haven’t worked with boys in a while, but I think it will be very, very different coaching them than coaching the women’s game.”

There will be extra pressure on the NSW Metro teams, after the girls claimed a clean sweep of titles at their nationals in Melbourne earlier in July.

.

“Everyone always wants to beat NSW,” Prior said.

“It’s just something that we know we’ll have hanging over our heads, but with so many coming back from the national team, they’ve all got a little bit of something to prove as well.”
