History could be made at this year’s Bill Turner Cup and Trophy as the tournament heads to Albury for a series of crucial clashes in early August.

Australia’s premier high school football knockout tournament hits the border city for another Festival of Football as teams push for the round of 16 and beyond in the girls and boys event.

The event will see eight teams, four in boys and girls, chase quarterfinal spots in round of 32 and round of 16 games.

Teams will come from Victoria and different areas of NSW, including the Central West, the South Coast and the Riverina, to compete.

“That’s why this tournament is in Albury (for a centre point),” Bill Turner Cup and Trophy event manager Greg Danvers said.

“Last year was the first year KTV showed this and the response was fantastic.

“Also, from a tournament’s point of view, it gives us a bigger footprint in the communities where we compete.

“Each year it changes, you get different teams.

“It’s very interesting.

“When you’ve got teams from Cairns all the way down to Geelong, it’s a massive competition.”

Bill Turner Cup and Trophy matches kick off on July 31.

This year is no exception with two teams set to debut in Albury in the round of 32.

And one could make the quarterfinals.

The boys round of 32 matches see’s Bega’s Eden Marine High School taking on Geelong’s Western Heights College in one clash, with Griffith’s Marian Catholic College facing Orange’s James Sheahan Catholic High School.

For Eden Marine and Western Heights, it is their first time at this level, and with both teams facing each other, one is guaranteed a round of 16 berth.

The girls will see Victoria’s Maribyrnong Secondary College taking on Orange Anglican Grammar School, with Griffith’s Marian Catholic College facing Kooringal High from Wagga.

Albury almost had a team in the tournament but fell at the final hurdle with Albury High School losing to Kooringal High on Friday.

The tournament starts on Wednesday afternoon.
