It will be the end of an era for one Sunraysia boys team as the area prepares to host the Victorian Country Championships for the first time this year.

This weekend will be the final tournament for the under-18 Sunraysia team after almost 10 years together.

And it will be a fitting way to end with Mildura hosting the tournament.

Last year they won the under-18 title in Ballarat as bottom-aged players, winning 5-0 in the final against Albury Wodonga. They went unbeaten throughout the tournament, scoring 28 goals and conceding just one.

They also won the under-16 tournament in 2022 and will start overwhelming favourites at home.

“They are probably out of all our teams, over the many years, one of the most successful teams,” Football Federation Sunraysia general manager Susan Watts said.

“They haven’t lost very many games.

“We ran a 2014 tournament here, the Junior SA Country Championships, and that team were in the under-11s.

“That was when they first started and have been playing since then.”

The team is coached by George Moraitis, who is the technical director at the association.

He will be a busy coach this weekend, also taking care of the under-11 team.

His two sons play in the under-18 and under-11 teams.

Watts said while it would be a weekend of emotions for the U18 team, there was a couple of other teams to look out for.

“Our under-18 girls were runners up (last year),” Watts said.

“As were our under-15 boys, so they will be competitive as under-16s this year.

“Our under-12 boys were also semi finalists (last year) and they are quite strong.”

Watts said one team to look out for would be making their debut in the competition.

“We do have one who could be a surprise packet,” she said.

“We have an under-10s team playing in under-11.

“Don’t be surprised if they win it, they are pretty good.

“They have some pretty good players in it.”

Watts said it’s going to be great for the region to host it.

She first applied in 2018 for Mildura to be host and was glad the event was finally coming.

The general manager revealed most places around Mildura was booked out as hundreds of people come to the region to play and support the children involved.

The tournament starts Saturday and runs until Monday afternoon.
