A painstaking three-year journey has culminated in a national championship for the boys of Killarney Heights High School.

The Sydneysiders have climbed the Bill Turner Cup mountain, knocking off Brisbane trophy hunters Corinda State High 3-0 in Wednesday’s final.

For Killarney Heights coach Zeke Desiatnik, it was the realisation of a dream one that he had put plenty of hours and his own equipment into.

“It’s been a three year project,” Desiatnik said. “Two of the balls in our kit are from my house.

“Hopefully we can create something special for the future of the boys and girls who want to play soccer on the northern beaches.’’

While the scoreboard might seem like the NSW champions had their way in the final, it was far from an easy ride.

The first half was a true grand final arm-wrestle with neither side able to break the 0-0 deadlock.

But a penalty midway through the second half, duly converted by Killarney Heights Nat Evans, opened the floodgates for the school.

Ben Suen latched onto the end of a cross to double the lead before Declan Feng drove home the victory in the final minutes from the spot.

“They were a good team,’’ Desiatnik said.

“We switched on in the second half but credit to them, they rattled us for the first half.”

The win makes it three straight years of NSW dominance in the Bill Turner School Football finals.

For the past two years NSW schools have emerged triumphant in the boys competition with Endeavour Sports High beating Ipswich Grammar last year and Narrabeen Sports High defeating Endeavour Sports High in 2022.

Prior to this, after a two year Covid break, Queensland’s Ipswich Grammar School had defeated Endeavour Sports High for the Cup.

The Bill Turner Cup is contested by boys Under-15 and includes teams from across the entire eastern seaboard from Melbourne to Cairns.

“They’re pumped”.

Two simple words sum up how Illawarra Sports High School feels about their tilt at Bill Turner Cup glory.

There’s always been a sense of excitement about what this particular group can do, and for goalkeeper coach David Curley he hopes the boys can cap off the competition in style.

Catch all the action from the Bill Turner boys and girls finals LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on KommunityTV on Tuesday, September 3 and Wednesday, September 4 from the Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility at Speers Point.

“We’ve got a good generation at the moment, and for a couple of years I’ve been thinking that in 2024 we can have a good Bill Turner Cup team,” Curley said.

“There’s a feeling that we can win this. They’re a really committed group to doing the best they can.”

One trait that has really stood out for Curley is their ability to fight back from adversity and find a way to win.

Illawarra Sports High are in with a real title shot.

One both occasions in the last round they had to come from 1-0 down in order to keep their Bill Turner hopes alive, and Curley credits the mateship they share off the field as key to that.

“In our last couple of games we came from behind against some really good teams. We showed a lot of character to come from down 1-0 to win 2-1,” he said.

“They find a way to do it. That’s the great thing about school football, they’re best mates. A lot of them play together in the local NPL1 team. There’s five or six from the Wolves and a few have played at the National Championships.

“Max Linton was recently chosen in the U16s All Schools Australian team, but there’s no superstars in the team, we play as one.

“We quite enjoy being the underdogs. People from the big city think they can make a mess of us. It’s a steel town thing.”

Curley knows they will need to be at their best against some of the top schools in the country, but said there is a belief they can get the job done.

“We want to win it,” he said.

“What we’ve learnt is that the teams we have played were quality. Once you get to the pointy end of a competition, anything can happen.”

The game where it all clicked for Bill Turner Trophy hopeful

They are the country school mixing it with the big guns, but who’s to say the dream run of St John Paul College can’t continue?

The Coffs Harbour school enters the finals of the Bill Turner Trophy with the underdog tag in their clash against Cairns State High, but it’s something they are used to and embracing ahead of their date with destiny.

St John Paul head of sport Danielle McAra admitted her girls ‘had quite a few tough games leading into this one’, but she pinpointed one as the moment it all clicked.

“We travelled away to Tamworth and played against Carinya Christian School. They bussed their whole school there and we had just our 16 players and coaches on the bus,” she said.

“It was us against the whole school. There was a moment we realised that if we can win in this situation with what felt like there were so many people against us, it gives us confidence that we can do it at the next level.”

McAra said the entire school has expressed their pride in their achievements to date, serving as inspiration to younger students.

“Being young ladies who are still into sport, it’s wonderful to see some of their dreams realised, playing at a high level and having that acknowledged by the school and their peers,” she said.

“We’d really like the girls to take that pride away with them. They’ve achieved such a wonderful level already regardless of the outcome at Lake Macquarie.”

Over the course of the competition they have had to call on every member of the squad to come up with the goods and keep their momentum trucking, something McAra said would be their greatest asset heading into do-or-die fixtures.

“The key with this group is they’re a team,” she said.

“They’re very good at supporting each other and filling in the gaps. They communicate with each other and pat each other on the back. They have an incredible commitment to the team above the individual.”
