Adelaide City’s under-17 boys lived up to captain Zak Valente’s pre-game optimism in the final of the FSA Junior Boys Cup - but not before having to outlast MetroStars on Sunday.
Valente had said his team was determined to bring the Cup home in the club’s 75th anniversary year.
MetroStars drew first blood in the final, scoring in the 27th minute.
City equalised in the 38th minute and the sides went to half-time at 1-1.
In the second half it was City taking the lead, scoring in the 50th minute, only for MetroStars to draw level in the 72nd.
At 2-2 at the end of regular time it was off to penalties, with City winning 4-3.
The game was one of six deciders broadcast live by The Advertiser from the Summit Sport and Recreation Park in Mt Barker.
The under-12 to under-16 finals were also live streamed on advertiser.com.au.

City’s under-17 side has been in impressive form during this season’s cup competition, having recently defeated Blue Eagles 3-2 in a dramatic semi-final.
“We’re in some strong cup form,” Valente said, before the final.
“I believe the positive mindset instilled in us throughout this season by our technical director Adriano Pellegrino and coach Laki Pavlou will help us gain the upper hand against Metro.”
“It’s a privilege and honour to be wearing the black and white and leading the team into the cup final, especially during our 75th anniversary.”
City, placed second in the league, expected a strong challenge against MetroStars, who sit fourth and handily defeated South Adelaide 3-0 in their last four clash.
Valente said his side was excited for the opportunity to play in the feature match on Pitch 1.
“We’re looking forward to it,” he said.
“We have the chance to finish what we started this year and end the season on a high.
“It would be a huge achievement to add another trophy to the cabinet, especially after the disappointment of falling short the last few years.”
In the other Pitch 1 matches, MetroStars faced West Adelaide in the under-13 final, while Raiders took on Adelaide Comets in the under-15s.
Comets were be aiming to spoil City’s party on Pitch 2 in the under-14 contest, with midfielder Vinko Stanisic saying before the game that he believed his team had what it takes to win the silverware.
“It feels absolutely unreal to be in the final and I’ll be proud of what this special group has achieved no matter what happens,” Stanisic said.
“I am fully confident the boys are capable of playing under pressure. We aim to play our game, take control and give nothing less than 110 per cent.”
And play under pressure they did, winning 4-3 on penalties.
Also on Pitch 2, Raiders faced Cumberland United (under-12s) and MetroStars (under-16).
