A highly inaccurate Old Brighton has prevailed in Saturday’s VAFA grand final rematch against Old Scotch.

The Tonners scored a remarkable 8.28 (76) to Scotch’s 4.7 (31) in a game that probably didn’t live up to the hype given the poor kicking inside 50.

A 0.9 (9) first-quarter from Old Brighton kick started a poor day inside 50 for the victors despite walking away winners.

Sam Flockart finished with two goals for the Tonners while skipper Harry Hill, James Hope and Mason Szonyi all finished with one.

In the reserves clash, it was also Old Brighton that finished 12.15 (87) to 4.6 (30) winners.

PREVIEW

It’s a grand final rematch but Old Brighton coach Marcel Bruin isn’t looking to buy into the talk of a revenge game for his side.

The Tonners will welcome Old Scotch for a huge VAFA Premier Men’s clash on Saturday in the first meeting between the two sides since last year’s decider, in which the Cardinals prevailed.

The action will be part of a huge live stream double header on KommunityTV from 11.40am on Saturday.

Bruin’s side is shaping as the team to beat this season after a 4-0 start while Mark Gnatt’s Old Scotch, who have been hampered by injuries, are 2-2.

But the Tonners won’t be taking anything for granted.

“Beware the wounded animal in some sense,” Bruin said.

“They’ve got a great system and we’ve been working on improving our method for the last six months to go one step better.

“Both sides are structurally different to the grand final, we’re missing some players and a few of their talls are now playing VFL.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for us to see whether the education we’ve been delivering is coming together. It did in the last quarter against St Kevin’s and we’re hopeful it continues to build.”

Old Brighton finds itself in the midst of a run of games which could shape its season.

After beating SKOB by seven points, the Tonners will next face the Cardinals, Old Xaverians and Collegians.

“It’s a great opportunity to see where we are at,” Bruin said.

“But there are no easy games in A-grade. The way the fixture has panned out, we’ve got games against the other sides who played finals last year and Old Xavs who were on a tear on the weekend.

“It always seems to be the case that teams seem fired up to play Old Brighton and I can only imagine Old Scotch will come with steam coming out of their ears after their loss last week.

“We played one of our better games against them last year and hopefully we can do it again.”
