Despite a strong challenge from an improving Dodges Ferry, Huonville has once again proved they remain a class above the SFL’s improving sides. Watch the REPLAY here.

A hungry Huonville Lions has returned to the SFL Community League winners list with an impressive 18-point victory over Dodges Ferry on Saturday.

The Lions were challenged throughout by the improving Sharks outfit but the 12.14 (86) to 10.8 (68) victory once again proved there remains a gap between the SFL’s upper echelon and the improving sides.

CATCH THE SENIOR REPLAY ABOVE AND THE RESERVES BELOW

A five-goal opening quarter provided a strong building block for the home side despite Dodges Ferry cutting a 22 point quarter-time margin to 16 at the long break.

But a four-goal to one third term snuffed out any real chance the Sharks had to cause a second-straight upset after knocking off the previously undefeated Sorell last week.

Medium sized Huonville forward Tom Wright finished as the game’s top goal scorer with four majors while Will Broomhall kicked three for Dodges Ferry.

The win took Huonville’s season record to 4-1 and tightened their hold on second-place while the Sharks now sit in fourth with a 3-2 record.

In the earlier reserves clash, it was also Huonville that walked away 13.11 (89) to 4.10 (34) winners.

PREVIEW

Dodges Ferry will continue to channel its inner Shark and remain the hunters heading into a huge round 5 SFL Community League clash against Huonville Lions this Saturday.

The Sharks had flown under the radar for much of this season before a 19-point win over the previously undefeated Sorell last weekend.

The win has slid them into third spot, equal second behind Sorell and equal with the Lions who they will now come up against on Saturday.

The Sharks and Lions clash will be available live and exclusive on KommunityTV from 3pm with the reserves match-up also available from 1pm.

Max Skelly, one of Dodges’ young stars, said they have embraced flying under the radar to start the season.

“You have got your top four who you want to chase at the moment in Cygnet, Huonville, Sorell and Lindisfarne as well,” Skelly said.

“We would rather be under the radar rather than have the spotlight on you. We just go in and get the job done, we aren’t getting hunted, we are the ones doing the hunting.

“We have always thought we were in for a good year, some say we were, some say we weren’t, but we’ve definitely had the belief there and we are a new group.

“We have a few games together and starting to click now, definitely got the belief there that we can go all the way.”

On the flip side, Huonville will be looking to bounce back after a 20-point loss to ladder leaders Cygnet, who ended the Lions undefeated run to start 2025.

Lions’ captain Jack Preshaw said his side took plenty of positives out of the loss.

“We fell a little bit short but it definitely gave us belief, it was a big day for the club down at home, lots of people there,” Preshaw said.

“But it definitely gave us belief that our best is good enough, it is just about getting all the calvary together.

“We had a few injuries as well, so I feel like when we get the blokes back we need we will be right and on our day our best is good enough.”

Preshaw said it took the Lions by surprise to see the Sharks knock off Sorell last week.

“It was a really good contest, one of those games where both clubs can take a lot from it and so can we,” he said.

“It took us by surprise given who Sorell have picked up and they obviously play a pretty exciting brand as well.

“It was one of those games that I think it is going to make things pretty exciting this week as well given the standard that Dodges have been playing.”
