The son of a former star Adelaide defender and current Port Adelaide assistant coach is ready to go up against the state’s best in this year’s Sapsasa Metro Football Carnival, beginning next Wednesday.

Mitcham Football Club young gun Will Bassett, the son of former Crow Nathan Bassett, will represent City South in the carnival, which will feature hundreds of young players.

Boys and girls games will be streamed by KommunityTV on The Advertiser website from two fields at Barratt Oval, West Beach, throughout the three days (May 17-19) of the carnival.

Bassett, who is 11 and in Year 6, started playing footy in Year 1 and has developed well as a halfback since joining Mitcham two years ago.

He said he was looking forward to going up against SA’s best youngsters for a second year after also participating last season.

“I have enjoyed playing in the Sapsasa carnivals and going up against a number of strong opponents,” he said.

“I played last year and really liked the competition.”

Bassett’s City South boys team will feature on Oval One on Thursday, clashing with Torrens River at 1pm, while the City South girls will feature on Oval Four through all three days.

While the rising star said he wanted to experience a high level of success at the carnival, he was most looking forward to enjoying the three days with his City South teams.

“I want to win as many games as possible, but my main aim is going to be to have as much fun as I can with my friends.”

His dad, Nathan, is currently the assistant coach at Port Adelaide at AFL level. He had an impressive 210-game playing career with Adelaide as well as a successful stint as coach of Norwood, winning three consecutive flags.

While he was used to expecting success, Nathan said he was not going to put any pressure on Will heading into the carnival.

“He mostly enjoys the friendships with his teammates at Mitcham or City South during and after training,” he said.

“I don’t place any expectations on him other than trying his best and being a better learner when he is at training.

“The kids love the event – the hoodies, the days off of school, and sometimes even the games themselves.

“Will played last year and his team had a good time. Around six or seven of his teammates also play at Mitcham, so it’s a good opportunity to strengthen those friendships while getting to know some other players from the teams in our area.”
