Sturt has secured its spot in the SANFL finals with a confidence-boosting win over North Adelaide on a final day headlined by upsets.

Sturt’s 11.11 (77) to 8.7 (55) triumph ensured it locked in a finals berth.

It was not the only upset on Saturday, with lowly West Adelaide also prevailing by one point against Norwood in club stalwart Logan Hill’s 200th and final match.

At Unley Oval, there were ominous signs for Sturt when the league-leading Roosters kicked the first two goals of the match through Tyson Brazel less than four minutes into the contest.

But the hosts worked back into the contest and trailed by seven points at the first change before slamming on the first four goals of the second term to lead by two majors at half-time.

Sturt held firm in the second half kicking four goals to the Roosters’ three with strong performances from skipper James Battersby, Steven Slimming and big men Daniel Fahey-Sparks and Lachlan Burrows.

Brazel finished with four goals for North while Campbell Combe, Frank Szekely and Aaron Young also battled hard.

The Roosters were waiting on the result from the Adelaide and Port Adelaide match to determine whether they would claim the minor premiership.

PREVIEW: SANFL SET FOR HUGE FINAL ROUND

Six clubs remain in SANFL finals contention heading into one last minor round full of possibilities.

All five round 19 matches will be played on Saturday – including the crucial clash between ladder leader North Adelaide and fifth-ranked Sturt, which will be live streamed here by KommunityTV.

The game will be broadcast from Unley Oval at 2.10pm, with Norwood against West Adelaide in the under-16s (11am) also available to watch live.

And, with six sides still in the race for the top five, we’ve looked at all the permutations heading into the final round. Scroll down to see the full story.

1. NORTH ADELAIDE

R19 opponent: Sturt

Potential ladder position: 1-2

Percentage: 57.96

A win for the high-flying Roosters would sew up the club’s first minor premiership since 1989.

But their final round opponent in Sturt makes top spot far from a formality with the Double Blues at risk of dropping out of the top five should they lose and possessing plenty of incentive.

North had a comfortable 46-point win in the earlier meeting between the two.

Should the Roosters lose Saturday, they can still claim the minor premiership if Adelaide lose the SANFL showdown to Port.

A significant percentage advantage will protect North dropping any lower than second.

2. ADELAIDE

R19 opponent: Port Adelaide

Potential ladder position: 1-3

Percentage: 58.06

Adelaide must win against rival Port Adelaide to be any chance of claiming its first SANFL minor premiership.

With the Crows poised to field an understrength team in the finals due to qualification rules, they thankfully have enough of a percentage gap over Glenelg to retain the important double chance regardless of Saturday’s results.

But Adelaide could finish anywhere from first to third with the side below – Norwood – likely to jump ahead with a Crows loss.

3. NORWOOD

R19 opponent: West Adelaide

Potential ladder position: 2-4

Percentage: 53.86

An eight-match unbeaten run and wooden spooner West Adelaide as its final round opponent has the Redlegs at very short odds to finish in one of the two double chance spots.

Norwood could drop to fourth with an unlikely loss and a Glenelg win, it is also a mathematical chance for the minor premiership but would need a huge percentage swing.

The Redlegs should finish second or third and secure a qualifying final berth.

4. GLENELG

R19 opponent: Central District

Potential ladder position: 3-5

Percentage: 51.48

With four defeats in its past six games, Glenelg’s campaign appears to be running out of steam as it approaches the pointy end.

A final round clash at home to Central District, which has nothing to play for, should yield victory for the Tigers and most likely see them finish in fourth spot.

A defeat coupled with a Sturt victory would see them drop to fifth, though coach Brett Hand will need his side to carry winning form into finals if they are to do any damage.

5. STURT

R19 opponent: North Adelaide

Potential ladder position: 4-6

Percentage: 52.17

Last week’s defeat to Woodville-West Torrens left Sturt in a precarious position as it faces top side North in the final round.

The Double Blues can still keep hold of fifth spot if they lose, but if the Eagles get on a roll against South Adelaide then it could come down to a very tight percentage difference.

An up-and-down season has shown Marty Mattner’s side is capable of almost anything and a home victory against the Roosters would push Sturt up to fourth.

6. EAGLES

R19 opponent: South Adelaide

Potential ladder position: 5-6

Percentage: 49.92

It’s a simple, must-win equation for Woodville-West Torrens on Saturday.

Win big against South and hope for a Sturt loss and the back-to-back reigning premiers could sneak into an unlikely finals berth.

The Panthers at Noarlunga is no easy proposition however and the Eagles will need to take care of business and then some before considering any other results.
