Woodville-West Torrens has sprung a massive upset on perennial champions Glenelg to claim the club’s first SANFL under-16 premiership.

The Eagles, who only booked a finals berth in the last round of the season, flew in the face of their underdog tag to take down the flag favourites by 40 points at Adelaide Oval on Friday night.

Both the under-16 and under-18 grand finals were live streamed by KommunityTV.

Glenelg had won four of the past five under-16 titles coming into the grand final.

But the Eagles played with winning belief from the start, turning a 10-point lead at the main break into 28 at the last change before saluting 9.10 (64) to 3.6 (24).

Star Woodville-West Torrens ruckman Tom Luck dominated the centre square and around the ground with 28 touches, 23 hitouts and six clearances to be awarded the best on ground medal.

Forwards Tyler Welsh (four goals) and Zane Pecker (three) made the most of the Eagles’ forward forays while Rome Burgoyne and captain Jett Hasting found plenty of the footy.

Charlie McAuliffe (30 disposals) and Lucas Camporeale (26 disposals, one goal) fought hard for the Bays, who could not convert their minor premiership into the main title.

Success did not elude Glenelg in the later game however.

The Tigers went one better than last season’s grand final defeat to prevail against North Adelaide and lift the under-18 premiership cup.

An enthralling back-and-forth affair ended with Glenelg seven-point winners after a tense final term.

The two sides traded the lead all night and the Roosters were within striking distance late, but unable to convert.

Glenelg’s 8.12 (60) to 7.11 (53) was set up by the likes of Archie Lovelock, Jakob Ryan, Ben Ridgway and Eli Redman.

Oliver Dignan booted four goals for the losing Roosters while Kane McAuliffe, Billy Dowling and Hughen Wissman were also prolific.

PREVIEW: STAGE SET FOR U16, U18 DECIDERS

A remarkable double swoop of the SANFL underage premierships is on the cards for Glenelg when two grand finals hit the big stage at Adelaide Oval on Friday night.

The Tigers will be aiming for a fifth under-16 flag in six seasons as it takes on Woodville-West Torrens before the club then faces North Adelaide in the under-18 grand final.

KommunityTV will live stream both matches with the broadcast beginning at 4.50pm.

Glenelg talent manager and under-16 coach Darren Trevena said having both sides reach their respective grand finals was a great accolade for the club’s junior program.

“I think it makes it really exciting and rewarding that the club is going down the right pathway with our development,” Trevena said.

“To have both sides make the grand final and to play on Adelaide Oval is a great opportunity for these young men.

“We’re looking forward to getting out there. I think will be about which side settles down first and gets their gameplan up and running.”

In the under-18 decider, Glenelg will take on a club also shooting for great success this weekend.

North Adelaide coach Craig Brooks said the Roosters were buzzing with the under-18 grand final leading into the league and reserves deciders on Sunday.

“It’s really good having the two senior sides in and the our boys are really pumped as well,” Brooks said.

“We’ve had a pretty good season … you want to play every game you can for the year and it’s all about getting through to the last game this Friday night.”

Brooks said the two sides’ strong midfield groups would likely dictate the contest with ball magnet Billy Dowling, midfielder Hughen Wissman and ruckman Isaac Keeler to be key to the Roosters’ chances.

In the under-16 decider, Woodville-West Torrens under-16 coach Darren Hams hoped momentum would play to the Eagles’ advantage.

“We had to win the last game of the year to make the finals and now to see that they’ve been able to win a couple of finals and progress to a grand final is a really good reward,” Hams said.

“We’re confident we have the talent to take it up to them.”

Star ruckman Tom Luck, forward Tyler Welsh, onballer Kade Herbert and captain Jett Hasting have been among the Eagles’ in-form players who will need to continue their strong run in the big game.

The under-16 grand final live stream between Glenelg and Woodville-West Torrens will begin at 4.50pm on Friday, followed by the under-18 decider at 7.30pm.
