Police investigating ugly football brawl after incident caught on camera

Police are investigating an ugly incident caught on camera in which a brawl spread from a football field into a grandstand.

NSW Police has launched an investigation into an ugly football brawl that was caught on camera.

Shocking footage shows an on-field clash spread into the grandstands and saw spectators become embroiled in the physical altercation during a junior football match in Sydney on Saturday.

The Daily Telegraph first reported the incident occurred during a game between Granville Rage and Camden Tigers at Rydalmere Park.

The footage shows one woman wearing a hijab was involved in the incident and appeared to throw punches towards another spectator.

NSW Police said in a statement the incident resulted in one man needing to be taken to hospital.

“Officers from Ryde Police Area Command are investigating after a brawl in Sydney’s northwest over the weekend,” Police said.

“About 3pm on Saturday 5 August 2023, two groups were playing a soccer match at an oval on Park Road, Rydalmere, when an on-field fight broke out.

“Police have been told a player left the field and approached a spectator before assaulting a 42-year-old man who sustained an injury to his wrist.

“Players and spectators attempted to break up the fight whilst others became involved. The man was taken to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition.

“As police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, anyone who witnessed the incident or may have mobile phone vision is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”

A Football NSW spokesman has told The Daily Telegraph: “Football NSW is aware of an incident that took place at a match on Saturday and has opened an investigation into the matter. No further comment will be made on the matter.

“Football NSW adopts a zero-tolerance policy to any form of violence at sanctioned events and is committed to promoting a safe and enjoyable environment for all football participants.”
