Champions League semi-finals preview: Harry Kane continues trophy quest with Bayern Munich against Real Madrid

Harry Kane opted out of Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham project on the eve of the season starting in a bid to end his long quest for a first major trophy. He has one last chance at silverware this season.

Many questioned Harry Kane’s decision to ditch Tottenham and Aussie coach Ange Postecoglou on the eve of the season starting – but the striker surely has no regrets with a chance to lift the most prestigious domestic football prize in Europe within reach.

Kane has had a blistering season – scoring 33 goals in the German based Bundesliga for new club Bayern Munich and another seven in his 10 Champions League games.

He is now just two games away from the chance to fight for the Champions League title.

Bayern Munich will face Real Madrid in the first of their two-legged semi final at 5am (AEST) on Wednesday.

The two teams have met 26 times in Champions League history – on paper neither team goes in with a huge advantage – they have scored 42 goals each in their previous meetings, with Bayern celebrating 12 wins and 11 loses.

But with Bayern missing out on the Bundesliga title they will fight hard to finish the season with the ultimate prize.

Socceroos great Robbie Slater said Kane would be desperate to progress to the final.

“He’s left Tottenham to win trophies,” Slater said.

“Leverkusen have had a one off amazing year, so no title, no cup for Kane, so this is it and they are up against the mythical Real Madrid, this competition just seems to be theirs, they have won it 15 times.

“They weren’t favourites to go to Manchester City but they did the job they had to do. It’s just extraordinary the link between Real Madrid and the Champions League.”

Slater said that Bayern couldn’t be written off though – especially with Kane’s current form in front of the net.

Statistically it is the team who plays the second leg in front of their home crowd that gets the better result but Slater said if Bayern could get a good enough start this week it could be enough to edge out Real Madrid.

“It is two massive clubs, it’s a mouth-watering tie,” Slater said.

Dortmund and PSG will battle for the second spot in the final.

Both sides have had to knock over formidable opponents to reach this stage of the competition.

PSG seem to enjoy the pressure of the knockout stages – netting 10 goals in their ties with Real Socieded and Barcelona.

While Dortmund have celebrated wins over PSV and Atletico de Madrid.

PSG, even aided by their seemingly unstoppable goal scoring weapon Kylian Mbappe, could struggle in the first leg with Dortmund undefeated at home in their last 10 Champions League clashes.

Slater said Dortmund’s returning hero Jadan Sancho, could be the key to the German side’s success.

“They haven’t been as threatening as they usually are, they sit fifth in the Bundesliga, but in this competition they have been pretty good,” Slater said.

“They have unbelievable home support, it’s a hard place to go and get a result, so PSG will be happy they have the return leg.”
