Former Adelaide United NPL captain Paul Wilson had a tremendous FFA Cup match for Hume City on ‘home’ soil
Former Adelaide United NPL captain Paul Wilson says he still has hopes of earning an A-League contract after the Reds cut him loose last year and is hoping to face them in the FFA Cup semi-finals.
Former Adelaide United NPL captain Paul Wilson’s dream of meeting the Reds in the FFA Cup is still alive after his new club Victoria’s Hume City knocked Adelaide Olympic out of contention on Wednesday night.
Less than an hour after Hume beat Olympic 3-1 at Angle Park after a neat hat-trick from rising star Marko Delic, Adelaide United drew Newcastle Jets at home while the Victorians will host Central Coast in the quarterfinal.
The Reds will play its next cup fixture at Hindmarsh Stadium on September 17 with Hume playing a day later.

A win to both sides will give Wilson’s Hume a good chance of hosting Adelaide in the semi-final.
“That would be a fairy-tale for me to face Adelaide United,’’ Wilson said.
“It would be even better if we can somehow get a result.
“But we can’t get too far ahead of ourselves, we’ll celebrate the win over Olympic and focus on our NPL finals game against Oakleigh Cannons this weekend.”
Wilson was released by Adelaide last year.
The FFA Cup will give Wilson another chance in the national shop window where A-League clubs are still hunting for five star Australian talent before the new season starts.
“Players just slip through the cracks in the system and it’s up to them to keep falling through or climb back up and out back into the spotlight,” Wilson said.
Earning his NPL debut with SA’s White City, Wilson then trained with Campbelltown City under current boss Joe Mullen.
Wilson was then selected at an open NPL trial by Mark Jones.
The towering stopper has featured 78 times in the NPL in SA and Victoria, ecstatic with the FFA Cup win in a venue where he was a regular at The Parks.
“I feel like I am more familiar with this field at Angle Park (where the Reds NPL team trained and played matches) than I am in Melbourne,’’ said the 22-year-old after a solid game a centre back for Hume.
“I am enjoying my football, we’ve had quite a successful year there winning the Dockerty Cup and making it to the NPL finals and having a great Cup run as well.”
