The region’s top cricketers will be back in the nets this weekend as Cricket Far North’s representative squads return to training in preparation for the upcoming season.
The Far North Fusion opens team will be the first to take the pitch at the Bulls Masters T20 Country Challenge, to be held in Bundaberg from October 2-5.
They will then be joined by the under-21s and under-18s to contest the North Queensland Zone Championships, where they will host the Townsville-based North Queensland in Cairns from October 24-25, before travelling to Mackay to play their remaining matches against Mackay-Whitsunday and Central Queensland from November 7-8.
Far North chairman of selectors Kev Maher, who has stepped into the role with regular selectors boss Greg Ferguson unavailable this season, said players would have limited opportunities to play competitive matches before representing the region.
“With the local competition not starting until October 10, we won’t be able to play any matches prior to the Bulls Masters Country Challenge and very few before the North Queensland Championships,” he said.
“We wanted to give them an opportunity to have a hit as early as this weekend if they can.”

Former team manager Steve Kerwitz will take the helm as coach of the opens side, with Wade Frazer also unavailable this season, while former Queensland Country stalwart Michael Salerno has joined the selection panel after calling stumps on his decorated representative career after the 2019/20 season.
Last year, the Fusion topped all three divisions at the North Queensland Championships.
At the Bulls Masters Country Challenge, they missed out on making their fourth grand final in five years in a heartbreaking final-over loss to North Queensland.
