COVID-19: Cruising Yacht Club of Australia closed, vice Commodore link to Thai Rock, Apollo Potts Point

The home of one of Australia’s most famous sporting events - the Sydney to Hobart yacht race - has been closed after a well known ocean racer and the club’s vice Commodore tested positive for COVID-19.

The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia at Darling Point, the home of the famous Sydney to Hobart yacht race, has been closed for deep cleaning and staff testing after well known ocean sailor and vice Commodore Noel Cornish and his partner tested positive to COVID-19.

Along with the entire board of the CYCA and staff, other sailors and members of the club have rushed to be tested in light of the news, while others who were at the club at specified times are self isolating.

Anyone who attended the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia on July 23 between 6pm and 7.30pm, July 24 from 3.30pm to 5pm and July 26 from 4pm to 5.30pm have been asked to monitor for symptoms.

The club each year organises and plays host to the world renown Sydney to Hobart yacht race which starts on Boxing Day.

The CYCA informed members St Jude owner and skipper Cornish, from Wollongong, and his partner Meg were tested after the NSW Government advised, people who had attended the Thai Rock restaurant in Potts Point between July 15 and 25 seek testing.

Cornish also attended The Apollo restaurant at Potts Point, the site of another outbreak.

“Noel and Meg had eaten there (Thai Rock) on 17 July 2020 and, while not directly contacted by NSW Government, went straight off for testing,’’ Commodore Paul Billingham said in an email on Tuesday night.

Billingham said the well-known Eastern Suburbs club will remain closed until at least August 1.

Earlier in the day the CYCA notified members via an email it had it had closed its clubhouse for deep cleaning and for the testing of staff.

“The Club, as part of its COVIDSafe plan, is working with NSW Health on next steps.

“The Club has been operating under a strict COVIDSafe plan, including mandatory sign-in for all patrons and intensive cleaning practices.

“The CYCA’s top priority remains the health and safety of our Members, guests, staff and the community at large.’

The club is located at 1 New Beach Road, Darling Point.

A case of coronavirus has also been linked to the Apollo restaurant at Potts Point.

The CYCA’s members boast some of the top sailors in the country with the club last year celebrating the 75th anniversary of the famous blue water classic, the Sydney to Hobart which starts on Sydney Harbour each Boxing Day.

The 76th race has so far received entries from 50 yachts and crews, including two internationals.
