Cairns baseball players step back up to the plate
Baseball will swing back into action in Cairns next month, with Cairns Baseball League and Cairns Junior Baseball League pencilling in July 25 season start dates.

Baseball will swing back into action in Cairns next month, with Cairns Baseball League and Cairns Junior Baseball League pencilling in July 25 season start dates.
Senior league president Daniel del Nido said instead of the regular May to September season, this year’s would be a shortened 10 or 12-week competition from July to October.

“We will probably be pushing a bit longer this year just to try and get in as many games as we can,” he said.
“At this stage, we’re planning to run a season for as many weeks as we can and then have a two-week final series, but that will depend on what sort of numbers we’ve got this year and how many grades we’ll be able to run with those numbers.”

Clubs returned to training this week and, unlike some sports that are limited due to COVID-19 restrictions on contact training, baseball, as a non-contact sport, will be less affected.
Del Nido said it would be a great time for new players to give baseball a crack.

“We’re offering discounted registration fees due to the shortened season, so it’s not going to cost too much to play this year,” he said. “We’re hoping it will bring people back into the sport and give others the chance to try baseball.”
