The infamous beer snake stunt that disrupted Friday night’s Australia v India play came at another cost - a whopping $2750.
Self-confessed beer snake bandit Lachie Burtt has told The Advertiser all about his party trick at Adelaide Oval.
The 21-year-old sparky reckons the beer snake was about 250 cups long. He built it with seven mates.
With the group’s drink of choice being Hahn beer, which costs between $11 to $12 from Adelaide Oval bars, the beer snake did not come cheap.
The Advertiser has done the maths and 250 cups of $11 beer would have cost the lads and their fellow beer-snake feeders on the Hill about $2750.
“The funny thing was everyone could buy four drinks … so we were all sitting there with four drinks each and there was six-seven of us … so a fair bit going on plus everyone around us on the Hill they were loving it,” Mr Burtt said, adding: “Shout out to the hill.”
Beer snakes are not new. They’ve been slithering their way around sporting venues for years and are always popular with cricket fans in Adelaide and around Australia.
Mr Burtt said “not a lot of thought” went into his decision to cross a restricted area on the hill with the beer snake.
“Next thing I know I am on TV and on Facebook and Instagram and everyone is tagging me and laughing at me … it’s good, it’s fun.”
Adelaide Oval’s premium beverage provider Lion even chimed in, with sales director Jarrod Shattock dubbing the beer snake an “iconic part of the Australian summer”.
“We have seen a few beer snakes over the years, and this was one of the best … and fastest,” he said.
Aussie batsman Marnus Labuschagne has also joined in the post-match beer snake commentary, posting “no worries brother” with a laughing emoji in response to Mr Burtt’s apology on the 9 NEWS Instagram page.
“I am happy Marnus saw the funny side of it,” Mr Burtt said.
