AFL GRAND FINAL: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
29 REASONS RICHMOND MADE IT THIS FAR
Brooke Cotchin, wife of Richmond captain Trent, and Sarah Grigg, wife of midfielder Shaun, said the public saw only a fraction of the work it had taken to make 2017 the year of the Tiger.
“I don’t have strong enough words to articulate how proud and excited I am for them,” Mrs Cotchin said.
She said the players would be stars in their families’ eyes regardless of tomorrow’s Grand Final result against Adelaide at the MCG.
“It all feels like a dream,’’ she said, accompanied by daughters Harper, 3, and Mackenzie, 1, dressed in Tigers jumpers with “Daddy’’ on the back.
“I and the girls see what he does every day, getting up and going to training, working towards that ultimate goal which is a premiership,” she said.
“Last year was a really hard year for us as a family, and it makes you realise if you just embrace it and keep working, anything is possible.
“And they’ve proven that this year, which is amazing. In our eyes, we think they’ve just achieved so much already.”
Mrs Grigg, who joined a Herald Sun photo shoot on Thursday with son Sonny, the Cotchins and shiny new Sherrins to be used in the Grand Final, also said she “couldn’t be prouder’’.
“Last year we never would have imagined we would be there this time, but it’s so exciting,’’ she said.
“It will be absolute mayhem if they get up — I keep telling everyone it feels like Christmas at our household, minus the decorations.’’
She said the Griggs were trying their best to keep a lid on expectations. “We’re trying to keep it as normal as possible, like every other game.
“But the logistics around the game this week are a little bit more intense.
“It’s unexpected, and we hope this keeps happening again and again. but we’re not taking it for granted.’’
Mrs Cotchin said Saturday would be all the sweeter after people had written off the Tigers, and after Trent had to endure a nervous wait for an MRP review to learn whether he would be able to play. She said the team had blocked out the hysteria of Grand Final week, and was focused on the prize.
“The boys are trying to stick together and the group is just so close, which is amazing to watch. The love is just out of control, which is so nice.”
She said Trent would soak up the Grand Final Parade with his family on Friday.
“It’s an amazing experience and something that we will cherish forever,” she said.
She said “it’s going to be tough”, but if the Tigers break their 37-year premiership drought, “it would be crazy. The Richmond fans would be out of control”, she said.
