TOM Rockliff is confident Port Adelaide has made the right decision to appoint Ollie Wines and Tom Jonas as co-captains for the first time in the club’s 149 history in 2019.

Fans and former club legends have been dividend on the decision to appoint dual leaders which is widely seen in across the AFL.

“I think we’ve made the right decision as a football club moving forward,’’ Rockliff said on SEN on Friday morning.

“Ollie and Tom will be great captains for the football club and hopefully they can lead us into success,’’ he said.

Rockcliff will play in Friday night’s AFLX in Melbourne and said the decision will have positive affects both on and off the field.

“We obviously had a bigger leadership group last year and we don’t think it worked as affectively as a smaller group will,’’ Rockliff said.

“We think they’ll be able to get more done, leadership meetings will be more affective, from that point of view we thought it would be better to go smaller than large,’’ he said.

Rockliff said the playing group all played a key part in selecting the new faces of Port Adelaide.

“We all had some input into who we thought has been really good through the pre season,’’ he said.

“We all had nominated two or three guys and gave everyone feedback around that.

“It was a good process everyone had the chance to show their leadership qualities and those were the three guys who really stood out,’’ he said.

And he said Hamish Hartlett was also a popular pick as vice-captain despite having his name on the trade table in recent season.

“He had an outstanding start to the season last year,’’ Rockcliff said.

“He’s an outstanding individual and his leadership qualities have really shone through, hopefully he can have a big season

“It’s a huge credit to him and how hard he works to get his body right and how much respect he has in the group,’’ he said.

The former Brisbane captain said it was import for Port Adelaide to have everyone working toward their number one goal and that was on field success.

“It’s important that we help those guys as much as we can,’’ Rockliff added

“Everyone is working towards the same thing within the footy club, it’s important we’re all on the same page,’’ he said.
