Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley lauds new captains Tom Jonas and Ollie Wines

Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley has endorsed new co-captains Ollie Wines and Tom Jonas, and announced the last member of the three-man 2019 leadership group as the club confirms it will be storing the No.1 guernsey away.

Ollie Wines and Tom Jonas will — as first reported by The Advertiser — share the Port Adelaide captaincy in a break of tradition at Alberton.

The Port Adelaide Football Club has confirmed the co-captaincy while announcing a new leadership group of just three men for the Power.

Hamish Hartlett is the new vice-captain.

This model replaces the larger leadership group from last season and has Wines and Jonas succeed Travis Boak as the Power captain.

The club confirmed on Thursday it would be storing away the No.1 guernsey — reserved exclusively for the skipper — until the return of a single captain.

Wines will continue to wear No. 16 and Jonas No. 42 this season.

Since 1924, every Port Adelaide captain — except Geof Motley (No. 17) in the 1960s and Boak (No. 10) for a charity last season — has worn No. 1.

Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley has endorsed the break in tradition that since 1870 has had just one skipper at Alberton.

“I have enormous faith in Tom and Ollie taking our club forward as co-captains, with great support from Hamish as vice-captain,” Hinkley said.

“Tom and Ollie have respective skill sets that will complement each other perfectly both on and off the field. We are working in a modern environment and the age difference between Tom and Ollie will serve us well in connecting the entire playing group.”

Both Jonas and Wines were to be presented at Alberton Oval as co-captains at 3.30pm.

In a statement, Jonas - who was recruited from SANFL club Norwood for the Power’s rookie list - said he felt privileged to captain Port Adelaide in the AFL.

“I’ve maintained all along that I would be incredibly proud to captain this great club and to work with Ollie to lead this group forward. It is truly humbling but also very exciting. We have a great group of coaches and a playing list which is ready to take the next step and I can’t wait to take on the challenge with Ollie and Hamish,” Jonas said.

Wines declared he was humbled by his rise from the vice-captaincy.

“To be appointed captain of Port Adelaide with Tom is very special,” Wines said.

“To follow in the footsteps of Travis and have your name alongside some of Port Adelaide’s all-time greats is amazing. As a leadership group we are looking forward to leading from the front both on and off the field and taking this club forward on a path to sustained success,” he said.
