PORT Adelaide utility Jackson Trengove has joined the Western Bulldogs on a three-year deal.

Trengove was the first official move of the 2017 trade period with the Western Bulldogs lodging the paperwork Friday morning.

Under the rules of Free Agency, Port Adelaide could match the offer made by the Bulldogs, but opted against it.

The Power will receive a second round draft pick, currently pick 30, as compensation.

“It’s a great result and it’s pretty exciting for me and my family,’’ the Victorian, who has a young daughter, told AFL Trade Radio on Friday morning.

“The Dogs have a great young list. I was extremely impressed by what Luke Beveridge had to say when I met him. He was terrific.

“Coming back home was big for me, coming back to where I was bought was always exciting for me.

“They appealed to me as a club where I can help out and have an impact

Trengove said he was open to again being used in multiple positions at his new club.

“I’m not 100 per cent sure where my best footy will be,’’ Trengove added.

“I think I’ll play a number of positions like I did at Port and probably just tie down one of the key roles down back.

“This year was a lot different, I think I still be affective as a second ruckman, I’m able to cover the ground a lot better than a lot of rushmen.’’

Trengove, 26, was pick 22 in the 2008 draft and played 153 games for Port Adelaide.

He said it was extremely hard telling teammates of his decision.

“I’ve loved the footy club have been here so long,” he said.

“Probably towards the end of the year it was made for me, I got dropped in a couple games and I was working really hard in the SANFL to get back into the side for finals.

“I was left out in a game where I probably could have played in and helped the team out. Probably that along with family and obviously my little girl growing up in Melbourne was probably the key factors in getting home.”

Trengove also said he’d been “working on” getting his good mate and fellow Victorian Jarman Impey to the Bulldogs from the Power.

Impey is under contract at the Power until the end of 2018, but both the Dogs and Hawthorn have been mentioned as potential trade suitors for the 177cm livewire.

“He’s in a unique situation where he has to make a decision and I can’t make it for him,” Trengove said.

“It’s sort of an awkward position that I’m in, obviously I’d love for him to play with me again.

“I’d love to make it for him and I know where he’d end up if I was making it, but he’ll make his decision in the coming weeks and he’ll make the right decision for what’s best for him.”

Trengove opened up on the pair’s dinner date with Western Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli, which was snapped by a Twitter user.

“Bont’s a great bloke, he did pick up the bill, which was terrific,” Trengove said of the meal.

“We just caught up for a beer and some dinner, it was actually Grand Final weekend so we had some stuff on down in Melbourne.

“It’s quite funny how a photo gets taken and everyone reads into it a bit too much.

But Bulldogs list manager Jason McCartney said the club had kept an eye on Impey.

“Jackson does have a pretty good relationship with Jarman Impey,” McCartney said.

“Jarman is a player that’s in contract.

“We like Jarman, we’ve tracked him pretty closely this year, but being contracted, there is a lot to play out there.

“Some other clubs are interested, we’d like to be able to do something there, but being in contract, there is a fair bit of water to go under the bridge there.”

The Shepparton product has played 75 games with the Power across four seasons.
