Port Adelaide is certainly different this season. The coaching panel has changed with the return of 2004 AFL premiership heroes Jarrad Schofield (midfield), Brett Montgomery (defence) and Dean Brogan (ruck).
The player list always changes, this time with more meaningful “outs” than “ins” as West Coast premiership ruckman Scott Lycett, young Hawthorn defender Ryan Burton and inexperienced Brisbane half-back Sam Mayes arrive while Chad Wingard (Hawthorn), Jared Polec, Jasper Pittard (North Melbourne) and Jack Hombsch (Gold Coast) depart.
Port Adelaide’s new blood — and potential new energy — surges from three top-order draft picks that deliver new midfield options: Connor Rozee (pick No. 5), Zak Butters (12) and Xavier Duursma (18).
Port Adelaide senior coach Ken Hinkley starts his seventh season — after a 3-3 count on making finals in the first six — under pressure (despite a contract to 2021) to make sure his side plays in September again.
