AFL Round 7 early mail: Selection news on Nat Fyfe, Patrick Cripps and full injury list

Nat Fyfe’s injury curse has returned. See how long he will miss, plus another Dockers KFC SuperCoach favourite ruled out, Luke Beveridge reacts to the Dogs’ loss to Carlton and Melbourne loses a key player.

Fremantle captain Nat Fyfe will miss Sunday’s western derby against the Eagles.

The dual Brownlow medallist made a surprising return from a hamstring injury against St Kilda last week after just one week on the sidelines, but spent the entire second half at full-forward.

Earlier this week coach Justin Longmuir was confident Fyfe would be fit to play on Sunday but on Thursday football manager Peter Bell revealed new scans had confirmed a strain in Fyfe’s right hamstring.

“Nat got through the game against St Kilda on Saturday,” Bell said.

“On Monday, we had him do some tests on his right hamstring and he reported 100 per cent strength.

“On Tuesday after a training run he pulled up with a little bit of soreness so we sent him off for a scan.

ROUND 7 TEAMS: DE GOEY BACK, PIES SHOW FAITH IN COX

“The scan indicated that he has a small strain to his right hamstring in a different area to the previous one, so unfortunately he will miss this week and potentially a few more games after that.

“Nat will get stuck into his rehabilitation and, hopefully, we’ll see him in a few weeks.”

First-year defender Dockers Hayden Young is set for a lengthy stint on the sidelines after ankle surgery.

“Hayden had a right ankle injury and that’s been diagnosed as a syndesmosis injury,” Bell told the club website.

“Hayden’s had surgery on that and is at home recuperating at the moment, then he’ll go into a longer-term rehabilitation.

“I’m not sure exactly how long that will be, we are hopeful he will be back to play some football at the tail end of this season.”

Griffin Logue is also be out for an extended period after being diagnosed with turf toe. In some good news, Bell said Sean Darcy was showing positive signs after copping a knock to the head from ben Long, but he still needs to pass a concussion test to be named.

DOG TO DEBUT AS BEVO SWINGS AXE

— Sam Landsberger

Western Bulldogs will blood their fourth debutant for the season on Friday night when they unveil No.15 draft pick Cody Weightman.

The exciting forward was the leading goalkicker at last year’s Under-18 championships, booting two bags of four goals and he will liven up coach Luke Beveridge’s forward line against Essendon.

Beveridge has promised major changes after Sunday night’s loss to Carlton.

“Already this week have had the four changes, non forced by injury, but in a sense it’s reward for players who are working hard behind the scenes for their opportunity,” he said on Thursday.

Weightman and Hayden Crozier are certain inclusions with the star defender set to return from suspension.

Louis Butler, Rhylee West and Josh Schache could be in danger at selection after quiet games against the Blues.

Weightman, 18, has been a standout at several of this year’s scratch matches and will become the 12th debutant from the first 15 players picked in last year’s national draft.

The bubbly teenager is listed at just 178cm but plays much taller than that with his strong overhead marking in the mould of Collingwood star Jamie Elliott and Bulldogs legend Brad Johnson.

Weightman has also modelled his game on small forwards Tom Papley (Sydney) and Charlie Cameron (Brisbane Lions).

The Haileybury College prospect boasted the second-highest retention rate of the most targeted forwards while playing for Vic Country last year.

TIGERS WON’T RISK COTCHIN

— Lauren Wood

Richmond is determined to remain cautious with skipper Trent Cotchin’s hamstring, with the captain to miss Saturday night’s clash with North Melbourne.

Cotchin, who has been sidelined since the team’s Round 5 win over Melbourne, and defender David Astbury (knee) will both miss at least another week given that a condensed run of games could be on the horizon.

The Tigers are also anticipating bringing a number of players including star midfielder Dion Prestia and Toby Nankervis – who both had ankle surgery after the Round 4 loss to St Kilda – north this week, but seven players including Bachar Houli and Shane Edwards will remain in Victoria for now.

“Obviously, the personal situations of Shane Edwards and Bachar Houli … they’re not available to come up at this stage. We’d prefer to get some training into those guys, with the possibility of coming up at a later date,” coach Damien Hardwick said on Thursday.

“We’ll also get some terrific coaching and training into those younger players that we’ve left behind. We’re going to stick with that strategy, but that will change as the circumstances do change.

“But, at the moment, we’ve got 35 players up here and we’ll continue to do that while having that hub back in Melbourne where we’ll invest in the seven players we’ve left behind.”

Houli’s mother Yamama continues to fight against COVID-19 after the premiership defender revealed on Monday that she was in intensive care, but Hardwick said that there had been a positive development.

“I think his mum is doing better from the news that we got today,” Hardwick said.

“Which is incredible. And we just hope she continues to be on the mend.”

EYE INJURY SIDELINES DEMON FORWARD

— Rebecca Williams

Melbourne will be without key forward Tom McDonald for Sunday’s clash against Hawthorn, deciding not to take any risks with his injured eye.

McDonald injured his eye early in last week’s win over the Gold Coast Suns at Giants Stadium, sitting out the rest of the match on the bench with a patch on.

A visit to hospital after the match revealed a scratched eyeball and he was still sporting a swollen eye after the weekend.

McDonald consulted an eye specialist this week and the Demons have decided not to take any risks by playing him against the Hawks at Giants Stadium.

“He won’t play, he saw an eye specialist and it’s just an area that you just don’t mess around with, the eyes obviously a pretty important part of the body,” Demons coach Simon Goodwin said.

“He won’t play, so he will have a week off, we just need to make sure that we don’t do any further damage to that eye and make sure that it is fully recovered.

“We will look at our team and we have got a little bit of time until Sunday to make those decisions, but Tom certainly won’t be playing this week.”

Goodwin said forwards Mitch Brown and Luke Jackson would come into consideration for the clash against the Hawks.

“Both of those guys will come into calculations,” Goodwin said.

“We had a look at the two talls last week only for a quarter of the game until Tom went off the ground but we certainly like the look of how it looks.

“So those guys will certainly come into calculations, they are both in good form and they both can offer something slightly different to each other.”

SAINTS LEAVE DOOR AJAR FOR HANNEBERY TO RETURN

— Nick Smart

St Kilda midfielder Dan Hannebery is “making a case” to return for Monday night’s clash with Adelaide.

The former Swan injured his hamstring a fortnight ago and missed last week’s loss to Fremantle at Metricon Stadium.

This week’s long break between games for St Kilda means Hannebery is considered an outside chance to face the Crows at Adelaide Oval.

“He’s going pretty well, he’s trying to make a case for this week,” Saints coach Brett Ratten said on Wednesday.

“He trained really well and the longer break has given him an opportunity so we’ll just work out if it’s this week or the Port game later or do we give him an extra week after that?

“That’s the decision we’ll make when we sit down with the medicos and start to go through and plan.”

Dan Hannebery was injured in St Kilda’s win over Carlton in Round 5.
Dan Hannebery was injured in St Kilda’s win over Carlton in Round 5.

Ratten called on his players to work collectively and not individually following last weekend’s capitulation to the Dockers.

He denied his players got ahead of themselves after quarter-time.

The Saints have lost Ben Long (suspended) for three weeks, but they boast a small injury list.

“We have a few options to go with,” Ratten said.

IRISHMAN OK, DANIHER SUFFERS ANOTHER SETBACK

— Reece Homfray

Essendon defender Conor McKenna is expected to be named in the Bombers’ team to play the Bulldogs at Metricon Stadium on Friday night just days after finger surgery.

The Irishman hurt his finger in last week’s win over North Melbourne but will be given every chance to play on Friday night.

“He played out the game with a pretty sore hand and only brought it up post-game, he’s had surgery on it, so the hand is now in better shape,” coach John Worsfold said.

“But surgery is not something you take lighthearted, the good news is he’s had the all-clear to play providing he feels he can play at the level he’d like to perform at.

“We won’t know that until it settles after this operation so we’ll give him as long as he needs, he’s a tough nut and that’s why we haven’t ruled him out.”

The Bombers trained on Wednesday and McKenna walked laps with Joe Daniher, who injured his calf earlier this week.

“It was in his normal training program and very early he felt something in his calf, we had a scan and sure enough he has got a strain there,” coach John Worsfold said.

Gun Essendon midfielder Dylan Shiel will be missing for two weeks.
Gun Essendon midfielder Dylan Shiel will be missing for two weeks.

“It just means he’s in a program now to get that calf right before he starts to build up his volumes again, he’s all good with that, he understands these setbacks will happen but overall things are still progressing.

“It’s a normal calf, hopefully with the volume of work he’s been doing it won’t take him too long to get back and we’ll keep progressing.”

Scans on Monday confirmed the soft-tissue blow that the Bombers said was unrelated to his persistent groin problems.

Gun midfielder Dylan Shiel will miss the next two games after he was banned for his bump on North Melbourne’s Curtis Taylor on the weekend.

Young ruckman Sam Draper will increase his game time in this week’s scratch match after getting through his return game from a knee reconstruction last week.

CRIPPS GIVEN GREEN LIGHT TO FACE PORT ADELAIDE

Chris Cavanagh

Carlton co-captain Patrick Cripps has been cleared of any shoulder damage and will lead the Blues in Sunday’s clash with ladder-leader Port Adelaide.

Cripps left the field in the first quarter of Sunday night’s Round 6 clash with the Western Bulldogs with a left shoulder complaint, but returned to play out the match and has pulled up well this week.

“Crippa had a minor episode to his shoulder during the game,” Carlton high performance boss Andrew Russell said.

“He got it strapped, came back on and had really good strength.

“He settled down well, trained (on Tuesday) and there is no issue whatsoever. He’ll train fully on Friday and play.”

In more good news for the Blues, fellow midfielder Marc Murphy will face a fitness test on Friday after hurting his hip in the final minutes of the clash with the Bulldogs.

“I think he’ll probably get up but he needs to get through training for the whole week,” Russell said.

Paddy Dow (knee) and Jack Silvagni (ribs) are also expected to be available for selection for the Blues.

FULL INJURY LIST

ADELAIDE

As reported earlier in the week, skipper Rory Sloane will miss at least a month after undergoing surgery to repair a fracture hand, suffered in the loss to the Eagles. But in good news for the winless Crows, Taylor Walker and midfielder Rory Atkins are expected to be available for Monday night’s clash with the Saints. Small-forward Lachie Murphy is likely to return from suspension but who replaces Sloane in the midfield? Myles Poholke and Paul Seedsman would be at the top of the list but given Matthew Nicks’ eagerness to play the kids, draftee Harry Schoenberg’s name might be talked about this week.

CARLTON

The Blues are adamant co-captain Patrick Cripps will feature against ladder leader Port Adelaide after battling through a shoulder issue in his side’s win over Western Bulldogs. Cripps’ shoulder will have more eyes on it than Myer’s Christmas windows in December this week but the club was confident as of Tuesday he would play. Veteran onballer Marc Murphy will face a fitness test after injuring his hip late in Sunday night’s victory, while Jack Silvagni (ribs) has now missed the past two weeks due to the blow which Bomber Zach Merrett was suspended for. Matthew Kennedy’s best game as a Blue will have pleased David Teague and potentially keeps Zac Fisher on the outer for another week. Fisher was the most notable of the four emergencies for the Bulldogs’ clash, although Teague would be unlikely to make changes barring injury after such an impressive win.

COLLINGWOOD

Debutant Will Kelly will undergo surgery on his injured elbow and is set to miss the rest of the season. It was a bittersweet debut for the young Magpie who kicked an early goal but seriously injured his arm after crashing to the turf following a marking contest. He will be replaced by Jordan De Goey, who flew straight to Perth with suspended teammate Steele Sidebottom and missed the club’s Round 6 triumph. Matt Scharenberg (ribs) was injured late in Collingwood’s win over Hawthorn and will be assessed this week, with John Noble a possible inclusion should he fail to recover. The Pies took on Geelong in a scratch match at the weekend and listed Noble and midfielder Brayden Sier as their best players. Flynn Appleby booted three goals in a two-point win. Josh Daicos is likely to return after hurting his ankle at training last week. He trained strongly on Tuesday to press his claims.

ESSENDON

Joe Daniher’s latest injury setback came only days after coach John Worsfold expressed optimism the key forward could return to football in the next month. While his latest calf strain is only expected to push back his recovery by two weeks, it is another blow to Daniher’s hopes of featuring in the shortened 2020 campaign. The Bombers will be without another gun midfielder this weekend when they take on Western Bulldogs after Dylan Shiel’s two-match ban for a high bump on North Melbourne forward Curtis Taylor was upheld at the tribunal. Conor McKenna will be named after finger surgery, and the Bombers could welcome back wingman Tom Cutler. They left out Aaron Francis, Matt Guelfi, Brandon Zerk-Thatcher and Mason Redman in Round 6, a sign of their enviable depth. Teenage forward Ned Cahill is worth keeping an eye on after booting five goals in a scratch match against the Roos at the weekend. And athletic forward Sam Sturt will miss another fortnight after hurting his ankle at training last week. The outlook is better for Brennan Cox, who was a late withdrawal against the Saints, however, with the defender expected to be available for selection.

GEELONG

Geelong’s stellar win over Brisbane was soured by a double injury blow to Mitch Duncan and Quinton Narkle to hamstring strains in the opening term. Duncan’s outlook is looking more positive and will be touch-and-go for their Thursday night clash against Collingwood, but Narkle’s is more significant. James Parsons shapes as a like-for-like replacement for Narkle on the back of strong scratch match form while Jack Steven won plenty of footy in limited after being managed last week. Ruckman Rhys Stanley (knee) is in full training and is closing in on a return and could replace Darcy Fort who has shown promise in his absence. Speculation that captain Stephen Coniglio would be sensationally dropped is unlikely to come to fruition after luckless Callan Ward’s latest knee setback. The club said he will miss the next 4-6 weeks after injuring his lateral collateral ligament in his right knee against the Power — thankfully not the knee he had a reconstruction on last season. Forward Daniel Lloyd (concussion) will face a test after colliding with teammate Jeremy Cameron against the Power, while draftee Tom Hutchesson (hamstring) and young midfielder Xavier O’Halloran (concussion) will both be available for selection. The Hawks will need to rejig their forward line again after losing spearhead Jon Patton to a hamstring injury in Friday night’s loss to Collingwood. Patton cut a distraught figure on the Hawthorn bench after his latest injury setback and is expected to be out for at least four weeks. The blow came after fellow tall Mitch Lewis suffered a hip issue the previous week, although he is a chance to return to fill the void. Jarman Impey’s first appearance since suffering an ACL injury was the one positive from Round 6 for the Hawks after he played in a scratch match against GWS Giants. Debutant Will Day was polished against the Magpies and could yet keep Jack Scrimshaw on the outer depending on his recovery from an ankle issue. However, midfield bull Ben Cunnington is still battling the back injury that saw him gather just seven disposals in Round 5. Roos football boss Brady Rawlings said they want Cunnington to get through a full week before he is considered for selection, which doesn’t bode well for a Round 7 return. Cam Sutcliffe’s return to the senior side didn’t last long with the 28-year-old hurting his hamstring in the second term in Sunday’s win over the Giants. The former Docker is expected to miss at least fortnight. Young wingman Xavier Duursma, however, is back in training and is a chance to return against the Blues after straining his hamstring in Round 3. The 20-year-old could replace the suspended Brad Ebert, in what may be the only change to the Power’s side, providing Steven Motlop passes a concussion test after a big collision with teammate Kane Farrell.

Brad Hill is under pressure to hold his spot after a lean run for St Kilda.

ST KILDA

Last week selection was easy at Noosa — Dan Hannebery out, Zak Jones in. This week the meeting will be much longer. Ben Long has been suspended for three weeks for a crude bump and nearly every other player is on notice after the Fremantle disaster. Axing Bradley Hill would be huge call but the star recruit hasn’t delivered bang for his big bucks for a while, while Seb Ross should also be under the blowtorch — the 2019 best-and-fairest winner is averaging eight fewer disposals and two fewer tackles per game than last season, gathering just 12 touches against the Dockers. Meanwhile, the likes of Jonathan Marsh (three disposals) and Dean Kent (seven) will be very nervous. So who comes in? The Saints have just about a full list available and they are all in Queensland, so Brett Ratten has plenty of options. Jack Sinclair was an emergency again at the weekend, Nick Hind could get another go and Jack Bytel is waiting for his AFL debut. And what do they do with Paddy Ryder?

Barometer Isaac Heeney (ankle) will miss the rest of the season and midfield bull Josh Kennedy (knee) is expected to be sidelined for the next six weeks. Their ruck stocks could receive a must-needed boost with Callum Sinclair (knee) a possible inclusion, with undersized ruckman Hayden McLean winning just five hit-outs for the match against Richmond. Youngster Justin McInerney is a chance to earn a reprieve having spent time on-ball this season, while dumped tall Aliir Aliir and Lewis Taylor, who has performed well in recent scratch matches, will enter calculations.
