Game-winning goal controversy

CROWS great and board member Mark Ricciuto says Josh Jenkins has done his own undercover work on “postgate’’ and backtracked on his belief that his matchwinning goal in Showdown 45 clipped the goalpost.

Ricciuto said Jenkins, who told him on Fox Footy straight after Adelaide’s epic three-point win at Adelaide Oval on Saturday that he thought his snap shot with 2:38 left had touched the post, had checked with Fox Sports on Sunday and that all the evidence pointed to a goal.

“I spoke to Josh Jenkins and he said in his grab after the game that he thought the ball hit the post,’’ Ricciuto said on Triple M on Monday.

“So I rang him (on Sunday) and said, ‘did you see it hit the post’ and he said, ‘no, I thought it hit the post’.

“Now he actually doesn’t believe it hit the post.’’

Ricciuto said Jenkins had spoken to Fox Sports to get its view on the incident and is now confident that his initial thoughts that the ball had glanced the post were wrong.

“He now thinks he got it wrong,’’ Ricciuto said after the Crows’ come-from-behind win gave them a 23-22 advantage in Showdowns.

Ricciuto said he also had contacted Fox Sports and been told that every camera angle suggests the ball did not hit the post.

This supports the AFL’s call, with the league on Saturday night giving the controversial goal the all-clear after its investigations.

“They’ve looked at every camera angle, we spoke to the bloke who did the score review and no matter what angle they look at they can’t say the ball definitely hit the post,’’ Ricciuto said.

“There is no conclusive evidence that it actually hit, so it looks like the original decision was correct.’’

Port Adelaide wrote to the AFL on Saturday night — after the league’s statement — posing serious questions on the validity of score review system that was introduced in 2012.

Port Adelaide football chief Chris Davies told The Advertiser on Sunday: “We have written to the AFL asking what angles (the reviewer) saw — and what vision the AFL saw hours after the game and why this was not immediately available for score review during the game.”
