KFC SuperCoach: The best and worst scores of all-time from Round 7

In Round 7 of 2008, a young Nathan Jones faced the ominous task of tagger Ryan Crowley. The result was a horror score from the Dees midfielder. Meanwhile, Matt Priddis is at the other end of the spectrum.

With no week-to-week KFC SuperCoach action to feast on, we have been reliving the best – and the worst – SuperCoach performances from that respective round in history.

There are sure to be a host of classic names that will give you your footy and SuperCoach nostalgia fix.

As Round 7 was slated to be played last weekend, we bring you the most rousing seventh round SuperCoach displays of all-time.

BEST ROUND 7 SCORES

After Gary Ablett topped the charts in the fifth and sixth round editions, it’s refreshing to see one of the most underrated SuperCoach players ahead of him this time.

Coming off his Brownlow Medal winning season, Matt Priddis went absolutely berserk against a dismal Gold Coast side in Round 7 of 2015. The Eagles work horse tallied 39 disposals, seven tackles, four clearances, two goals and 195 SuperCoach points in their 92-point thumping – the highest seventh round score under the current scoring model.

This performance was a touch uncharacteristic for the Eagles hard nut. Renowned for his clearance work and handball happy nature, 29 of Priddis’ possessions in this game were uncontested and 18 of his disposals were kicks – his highest tally for the year.

Priddis went on to average 113 SuperCoach points for the season, falling below 98 points in just four matches.

He just edges out SuperCoach stud Gary Ablett, who sent Sydney to the cleaners with a lazy 194-point outing in the seventh round of 2010 – nearing his record 251-point display against the Swans in 2008.

Former Blue and Roo Jarrad Waite was capable of pulling a monster score out of nowhere, and his inspired 189-point total against a rampaging Adelaide side was no exception. Waite piled on six goals and won 22 disposals, hauled in eight marks and laid six tackles at Blundstone Arena in Round 7 of 2017. Not a bad effort for a 34-year-old.

Like Priddis, SuperCoach stars Jack Macrae (188) and Max Gawn (174) both posted their seventh round stunners against the lowly Suns.

Further down the list are two big scores from the 2008 – Daniel Motlop’s 168 against Essendon and Adam Cooney’s 167 point total against the Swans.

Motlop’s is certainly the most bizarre, given he averaged just 70 points that season. His seven goal haul featured some freakish finishes, but he wasn’t able to reward SuperCoaches who jumped on the bandwagon, averaging just 62 points across his next six games – including a score of 18.

SURPRISE ROUND 7 SCORE

Nathan Krakouer – 159 points vs Brisbane, Round 7, 2011

Austin Wonaeamirri – 158 points vs Fremantle, Round 7, 2008

If you were shocked by Motlop’s 168, try these two on for size. This category generally reserved for one player, but it was too difficult to toss up between Austin Wonaeamirri and Nathan Krakouer.

Wonaeamirri had been providing solid returns for SuperCoaches as a cash cow until his once-in-a-blue-moon display against Fremantle in Round 7 of 2008. His 15 disposals, eight marks and four goals in just his fifth AFL game yielded a mind-boggling 158 points, sending SuperCoach into meltdown. Those who fielded him were counting their lucky stars, while others who benched him were left hurting. His price skyrocketed on the back of this unforgettable score, proving to be a valuable investment for owners.

How Nathan Krakouer posted a score of 159-points remains a mystery. Coming off paltry efforts of 33 and 34 in his first two games for his new club, the Suns recruit returned in Round 7 of 2011 and stunned the Lions and coach Guy McKenna. Krakouer racked up 16 disposals, 10 contested possessions, five tackles, three score assists and slotted five goals in their Q-Clash triumph. The outing was his sole 60-plus score in his 13 games that season, averaging a meagre 47.1. It really was one out of the box.

STINKER ROUND 7 SCORE

Nathan Jones – 7 points vs Fremantle, Round 7, 2008

In the same game Wonaemirri announced himself, an inexperienced Nathan Jones floundered. Jones had his pants pulled down by super-stopper Ryan Crowley, restricted to just four disposals, one tackle and seven points – ouch. Of the 92 minutes Jones spent on ground, the irritating tagger was by his side for 88 of them. Unfortunately, Jones was unable to have a significant impact in those four minutes, his side narrowly going down by four points in a high scoring affair.
