KFC SuperCoach Round 7 late mail: Bombers rookie bolter, full teams fallout

The most popular SuperCoach move this week is to trade in two rookies to build a war chest of cash for next week. But an unsung Bomber presents another way that could give you a jump on the pack.

A host of debutants in Round 7 has thrown up an alternative trade plan that could give smart KFC SuperCoach players a jump on their rivals this week.

The most popular tactic this week is to pick up two rookies, with Izak Rankine, Will Day, Andrew McPherson and Cat Sam Simpson, who played on Thursday night, leading the way — taking a points hit this week to build a big war chest for future trades.

The plan is based largely on the theory that good rookies don’t come along that often so when they are available, we need to grab them. But it might not be that simple.

Another batch of first-gamers has been named for Round 7 who will be on the bubble next week, opening the door to nabbing an unpderpriced star this week — Bailey Smith and Elliot Yeo are very appealing — and picking up one of this week’s debutants next round.

The options include Essendon mid-forward Ned Cahill ($117,300, FWD/MID) and Bulldogs forward Cody Weightman ($144,300, FWD), who will both make their debuts on Friday night.

Sydney has named exciting youngster Elijah Taylor ($117,300 MID/FWD) for his AFL debut against Gold Coast on Saturday and there are several possible first-gamers in extended Sunday squads including Dockers Minairo Frederick ($117,300 FWD) and Tobe Watson ($12,900 DEF) and West Coast’s Xavier O’Neill ($123,900 MID)

Former Saint Darren Minchington ($117,300 FWD) could also play his first game for Hawthorn at rookie price.

Bomber Cahill could be the pick of the bunch.. He averaged 79 points per game during last year’s under-18 national national championships, while Weightman went at 80 points as Vic Country teammates. Cahill could be a promising scorer if he receives some of Dylan Shiel’s midfield time, and he has the added bonus of dual-position status that could be very handy in patching over any holes in our teams in coming weeks.

Looming changes to the fixture are also likely to include a bye for all teams except Essendon and Melbourne — who have effectively had theirs already when their Round 3 game was postponed due to a positive COVID-19 test — which means Cahill could be playing when other players have the week off. That’s if he keeps his spot.

Weightman will provide plenty of highlights with his giant leap and athleticism but is likely to be inconsistent as a forward, recording two tons and two scores under 50 at the carnival.

LATE CHANGE: NOBLE IN FOR PIES

John Noble owners – hit the reverse trades button!

The Collingwood rookie earned an 11th-hour reprieve at the expense of American giant Mason Cox for the Magpies’ clash at Perth Stadium on Thursday night.

Wet weather in Perth forced the Pies’ hand with conditions far from ideal for the 211cm ruck/forward, with Noble earning the late call-up just an hour from the first bounce.

It’s a surprise reward for close to 40,000 KFC SuperCoaches who held onto the running defender – down from 62,700 after he was dropped prior to Round 5.

Noble posted 72 points in his last outing tallying 11 touches and five tackles against the Giants and has a break even of 19 ahead of Round 7.

Noble started strongly but faded to finish with 62 points, which should net him a price rise of about $20,000 this week.

IS IT WORTH HOLDING FYFE — AGAIN?

In KFC SuperCoach you can be made out to be a genius one week and an utter fool the next.

the Net Fyfe injury scenario sums this up perfectly, after it was confirmed by Fremantle coach Justin Longmire the superstar would miss this week with a hamstring – and possible a few more after that.

Those who held onto the dual Brownlow medallist were jumping for joy when it was revealed he had recovered from his initial hamstring blow after just one week.

Chalking up more than 60 points in the first half playing through the midfield, Fyfe then remained in the forward line for the entire second half.

Sure enough, scans this week revealed Fyfe had strained his hamstring in a different part to where he suffered the first setback.

Those who regretted discarding him immediately felt vindicated, while those who held cursed themselves.

Trading out the SuperCoach beast appears to be the logical option now as not even Nat Fyfe can come back from consecutive hamstring blows with a one-week lay-off.

It could be worth trading out non-playing rookies or cash cows whose money-making has stalled before trading Fyfe, in order to gauge the time frame for his return.

But in a year where trading on instinct has proved pivotal, trading him to a Round 7 bubble boy or bringing in a top-line star like Tom Mitchell also has merit.

The injury opens the door for the Andrew Brayshaw breakout to continue at breakneck speed, while premium forward Michael Walters and cash cow Caleb Serong also should benefit.

In more bad news for Fremantle, Hayden Young’s season appears to be over after scans confirmed a syndesmosis injury. This makes him a must-trade for owners.

CRIPPS CLEARED TO PLAY

Thankfully, Patrick Cripps won’t add to the woes of Nat Fyfe owners. The Blues co-captain will feature in Round 7 despite being noticeably affected by a shoulder injury during their clash with the Bulldogs last week. Blues fitness boss Andrew Russell said there is “no issue whatsoever” so fingers crossed he can deliver after an underwhelming SuperCoach campaign to date.

WHICH ROOKIES SURVIVED?

KFC SuperCoaches have become accustomed to rookie carnage this season and several cash cows have been left out or been ousted ahead of Round 7

Giants ball-winner Tom Green is the casualty for returning star Tim Taranto, while Bulldogs defender Louis Butler was one of four Bulldogs dropped. Swan Justin McInerney was tipped to return with Isaac Heeney and Josh P. Kennedy suffering long-term injuries, but has been overlooked with exciting talent Elijah Taylor set to make his debut.

Mitch Georgiades has been named on an extended bench to face the Blues, as has Dockers mature ager Tobe Watson and teammate Martin Frederick, who could both make their debuts.

For those looking to bring in rookies Will Day and Andrew McPherson, both have been named after impressive debuts with Day named on the field at half-forward for the Hawks.

Underperforming rookies Jake Aarts and Brandon Starcevich have held their spots after paltry totals last week, but Jarrod Brander has missed out yet again.

CEGLAR NAMED DESPITE BROKEN TOE

Hang on … what?

News filtered out earlier Thursday that ruckman Jon Ceglar ($415,700 RUCK/FWD) would miss at least this week and possibly more with a broken toe, after playing through the pain against Brodie Grundy last week. However, he has been sensationally named by the Hawks in the ruck to face Max Gawn. Hawthorn will name their final 22 on Friday afternoon so keep your eyes peeled to see if he is cut from their extended squad. Otherwise, it looks like a hold for now for owners who would have been looking forward to trading him out after scores of 53 and 43 in the past fortnight.
