DUSTIN Martin swept all before him in an incredible 2017 labelled by Leigh Matthews one of the best individual seasons ever played.

Does that make him a must-have in SuperCoach for 2018?

MARKETS: WHO WILL BE YOUR CLUB’S TOP SCORER?

REG GRUNDYS: DUSTY LIKE YOU’VE NEVER SEEN HIM

There are some very good reasons to include Dusty in your starting squad - and some arguments for leaving him out.

At $656,000, will you be picking him? Vote and have your say!

WHY WE SHOULD PICK HIM

*Martin’s average of 119 points a game last season was the second-best in the competition, behind only Patrick Dangerfield. Those numbers look even better if we focus on the second half of the year - he averaged 124 from Round 12 and scored 150, 114 and 158 in Richmond’s three finals, which aren’t taken into account by the SuperCoach banker.

Suddenly his price of $656,000 looks like decent value.

*Dusty’s high ceiling makes him a great captain option. Last year he scored at least 140 seven times with a season-high 165 in Round 11 - that’s 330 if you had the “C” on him.

*He’s untaggable. If Martin isn’t dominating in the midfield or just needs a bit of a rest, he heads to the goalsquare and monsters opponents. By the end of last year, teams didn’t even try to tag him.

*There are reasons to think Martin could perform even better this year. He doesn’t have the constant distraction of a contract saga. He admitted last year the Brownlow played on his mind late in the season - but that could happen again.

*He’s fun to watch and a great player to barrack for, even if you aren’t a Tigers fan.

WHY WE SHOULDN’T PICK HIM

*The price. His starting value of $656,000 is more than $20,000 higher than he reached at any stage last season (his high point was $633k in Round 15). He’s almost certain to be available cheaper at some stage. Last year he started at $588,300 but you could grab him for $510,000 at Round 9.

*Dusty’s 2017 was insane. Is it even possible to improve on that? In SuperCoach we are looking for players who will perform above their price value.

*With a premiership and just about every AFL award already in his pocket, plus a monster seven-year contract, could Martin relax just a little?

THE VERDICT

Al Paton says: Dusty averages 142 in his last four games and booted four goals against Carlton in last year’s season opener. Spend the cash and put the VC on him on Thursday night to start your season right.

Ben Higgins says: It’s a calculated risk but I’ll be waiting for him to drop in price.

The Phantom says: On his own, there is no doubt that Dusty is worth every cent. Although he’ll be in all of ours teams at some stage, the question is can you start with two $650k-plus midfielders, who share the same bye?
