‘Donate for doughnuts’ campaign raises almost $10,000 for cancer research from frustrated SuperCoach players

There isn’t much worse in SuperCoach than one of your players scoring zero. But one group of passionate fans has channelled that negative energy into a campaign that has raised almost $10,000.

Fagan: Zorko will play if fit

SuperCoach can be a frustrating game to play.

For all the advice, research and strategies that are available, there is something that always comes up trumps – luck!

Bad luck can hit everyone. It doesn’t matter if you are ranked 100th or 100,000th, bad luck can catch you at any moment, any time. So how do we prevent bad luck? Well, we can’t! But we can turn a negative into a positive, which is why the team at Doctor SuperCoach decided to use bad SuperCoach news for good via The Cancer Council Victoria.

With the help from our incredibly supportive and generous community, we have helped raise almost $10,000 for the Cancer Council since the start of 2017, mainly after an idea to “donate for doughnuts” went viral.

The concept is simple – asking SuperCoach players to pledge any amount — $1, $5, $10 or more if you can afford it — that you will donate to the Cancer Council if you have a zero score (otherwise known as a “doughnut”) from one of your on-field players in SuperCoach.

Copping a doughnut is one of the most dreaded aspects of SuperCoach, and unfortunately we have seen many examples this season, from Travis Boak’s (very) late withdrawal to Max Gawn’s one-week ankle injury and, worst of all, Stephen Coniglio suffering an injury before he had even scored a point against Richmond.

Thousands of SuperCoach players copped a doughnut rather than trading out Max Gawn.

But while everyone is entitled to indulge in a bit of self-pity over incidents like these, channelling that negative energy into a positive is a much better result for everyone. It also generates some hilarious dark humour, with messages accompanying donations (that are all read out on our podcast) including “Stephen Conilgi-dough”, “BHurn-man”, and going “Broak” for Travis Boak!

This season “donate for doughnuts” has expanded to new horizons of SuperCoach pain, in this case self-inflicted.

“Donate for dumb things” invites players to donate a certain amount for the facepalm-worthy mistakes things they have made in SuperCoach during the season. Once again, all accompanying messages with the donation are read out on the podcast and enjoyed by thousands!

Some recent “dumb things” that prompted donations include forgetting about a Thursday night match and the accompanying early lockout; nominating a rookie as captain when trying to take a large Brodie Grundy vice-captaincy score — then discovering the rookie actually played; taking a shower at the worst possible time and missing a late team change; and trying to use a loophole but forgetting to nominate a benched player as an emergency (this one seems to come up a lot).

There is only one overall winner in SuperCoach, but there doesn’t have to be. By taking part in these fun campaigns, playing along with the generous SuperCoach community and making up a few pledges of your own, we can all be winners in supporting The Cancer Council in their quest for cancer research.

Join the fun over the last few weeks of the season, and help society with your SuperCoach obsession, by searching for “Doctor SuperCoach” on all your favourite podcasting platforms and by donating here.
