Abbey Holmes’ star has been rising behind the microphone at Channel 7, but the former AFLW great has bigger aspirations.

Abbey Holmes has been plying her trade behind the mic on the boundary line with Channel 7, but the former AFLW star has bigger aspirations.

Holmes is eyeing off a spot in the commentary box alongside some of the great callers of the game and she’s got some inside help.

While he may be an extremely divisive figure, Brian Taylor remains the number one caller in the country and he’s helping Holmes build up her skills.

“It is 100 per cent on the vision board and ultimately something I would love to work towards,” Holmes said to the Herald Sun.

“BT has been unreal. He has been unbelievable in the support he has shown me over the last few years.

“BT is like ‘let’s sit together, we will practice, we will call a game, what can I do to help?’, whereas I am the one going ‘Oh my god, I can’t let you hear me until I am at a certain level.’”

Holmes hung the boots up following the 2018 season before she picked up the microphone and joined Channel 7.

Holmes’ move to behind the microphone has seen her become a star at Seven and she landed a role in the commentary team for the 2020 AFL Grand Final.

But Holmes knows the dream of one day sitting in the commentary booth and calling a game isn’t one that won’t be achieved quickly. But she’s committed to putting in the work and proving her worth.

“I am the type of person that once I set my mind to something there is nothing or nobody that is going to stop me from achieving that goal,” she said.

“I have always been mentally strong and driven to achieve the goals that I do set for myself.”

Holmes wouldn’t be the first female to commentate an AFL game, but the path she’s currently on she’s on track to be the most successful female caller for the AFL.
