SPOTS in Sturt’s team of the century did not come cheap.
The Double Blues have had a vast number of champions and there were many stars who missed a spot in the team of 22.
So for Bill Mayman, inducted into the South Australian Hall of Fame on Monday night, to earn a berth reflects a special player loaded with talent who had a magnificent career.
After starting his senior career in 1906 with a West Australian Gold Fieldfields Football Association premiership with Mines Rovers, Mayman played three games for WA in the national carnival in Adelaide five years later.

In 1913, he was recruited to the Double Blues and the following year the centreman took on the captaincy role. He was also named skipper of the SA side that year for the national carnival in Sydney, as well as earned the Double Blues best and fairest award.
Then in 1915, the Double Blues finally broke through for their first flag with Mayman, also the coach, leading the side superbly in a best-on-ground performance in the grand final triumph over Port Adelaide.
With the competition going into recess for World War 1, the Double Blues had to wait until 1919 to defend the crown and again it was Mayman taking charge in the win over North Adelaide in the memorable replay as captain-coach.
The triumph was not enough for Mayman to be retained as captain and he was replaced by Vic Richardson, also named in the Team of the Century. It was to be his final season at Unley before moving to Tasmania.
Mayman achieved the rare honour of playing for three different states when he captained Tasmania in the 1924 national carnival, having led a combined Tasmanian Football League outfit to a stunning win over a SA second 18 at Adelaide Oval the previous year.
After 315 senior appearances, 28 interstate games and three premierships, he retired after the 1925 season.
