Colville, Laird under the pump as SANFL coaches have the final word on their SANFL battles this weekend

Two rounds into the SANFL season and some coaches would be sleeping a lot more comfortable than rivals Roy Laird and Gavin Colville — one of whom will remain winless after Round 3.

SANFL 2019 Round 2 highlights

There have been just two rounds of SANFL action, but already there are coaches feeling the heat.

Central District will host West Adelaide on Saturday and both teams will be chasing their first win of the season. The loser will be well and truly on the back foot.

The two AFL reserves teams need a response on Saturday after being overrun last weekend, while Sturt coach Nathan Grima will be a little more relaxed after the brave win over Woodville-West Torrens.

Norwood coach Jarrod Cotton has two wins, but the side has lacked consistency. The Redlegs beat the Bulldogs by three points in Elizabeth after leading by more than 40.

So what are the thoughts of the coaches on the eve of the third round.

Central District v West Adelaide

X Convenience Oval, Elizabeth, Saturday, 1.10pm

Central coach Roy Laird

Q: This is only the third round, but it looms as a big game?

A: The footy club treats them all as big games, but we are 0-2 and need a win. We were excellent in periods against Norwood last week, but we need to be more consistent.”

West coach Gavin Colville

Q: This is only the third round, but this looms as a big game?

A: Absolutely a big game. The players are aware of this. Our best footy has been really pleasing. We need to maintain this for longer.

Norwood v Sturt

Coopers Stadium, Norwood, Friday, 7.20pm

Norwood coach Jarrod Cotton

Q: Is it encouraging to win both games despite not producing four-quarter efforts?

A: Great for the belief that our best is very good, but very aware that we need to be more consistent for longer periods.

Sturt coach Nathan Grima

Q: How much confidence and belief can the team take out of the win over the Eagles?

A: It gives the players confidence in their fitness and preparation to run out games with limited rotations. Good-character wins are something you can build on.

Woodville-West Torrens v Adelaide

Maughan Thiem Kia Oval, Woodville, Saturday, 1.10pm

Eagles coach Sam Lonergan

Q: Is it hard to plan for Adelaide, not being totally sure who they will have on the park?

A: No, we focus on our process and systems to get the job done. ‘

Adelaide coach Heath Younie

Q: What has been the main focus after the game against Glenelg?

A: The main focus for our players has been skill fundamentals — unfortunately we didn’t use the ball the way we liked last week, giving up 11 goals from turnovers. So, we have spent the majority of our training building competence in these areas.

Glenelg v South Adelaide

South coach Jarrad Wright

Q: Coming off two great wins, are you confident your game will stand up on the smaller ground?

A: Yes, I have full confidence in our players and system to adapt on the smaller oval. We have a very strong contested style similar to Glenelg so we are expecting a physical game.

Port Adelaide v North Adelaide

Alberton Oval, Sunday, 2.10pm

Port coach Matthew Lokan

Q: What is the biggest area needing a response after last weekend?

A: We felt we fought the game out well considering the restrictions we had after quarter time against a very good South Adelaide and we expect the same from all players this week against North Adelaide.

North coach Josh Carr

Q: Does Alberton Oval mean much to you anymore and do you enjoy returning there with the Roosters?

A: I always love getting back to Alberton. It’s where my South Australian football journey started so its nice to return there even if I’m opposition. I think the players enjoy playing there also. The ground is always in superb condition and it suits our style of football.
