Panthers could face more pain as 40 South Australian players nominate for mid-season draft

The AFL mid-season draft is set to have a significant impact on the SANFL, with South Adelaide in danger of losing a third ruckman in six months. See the full list of 40 SA nominees.

South Adelaide is in danger of being robbed of a third key big man within six months following speculation there is AFL interest in ruckman Michael Knoll.

Recruited from Box Hill as a replacement for Keegan Brooksby, Knoll is among the 40 players from South Australia who have registered for the controversial mid-season draft which has been reintroduced this year.

Knoll, selected in the SANFL squad to prepare for the state game against the WAFL in Perth on Sunday, played in the VFL for two years after four years of basketball in the US college system.

With AFL recruiters in the Noarlunga Oval stand on Saturday, he was named best for the Panthers in the victory over West Adelaide.

Brooksby was picked up by West Coast late last year in the new pre-season supplemental selection period. The Panthers were then dealt another massive blow when key young forward Hayden McLean was taken by Sydney under the same supplementary list rules.

McLean had joined the Panthers from Sandringham after being overlooked in last year’s draft and was lost to the club on the eve of the season.

There have been 308 players nominate for the mid-season draft, with the majority based in Melbourne.

Norwood’s dual Magarey Medallist Mitch Grigg and teammate Dom Barry, delisted by Port Adelaide at the end of last season, did not put their name forward.

The SANFL clubs will have greater awareness on Wednesday if they are at risk of losing players when AFL clubs nominate players for a medical test.

AFL clubs can name three players for the medical tests on May 22. The clubs have until noon on May 27 to place a listed player on the inactive list because of a season-ending injury or retirement and the mid-season draft will be held that night.

To be eligible for the draft, players must have nominated for last year’s national draft or been on an AFL list.
