North Adelaide premiership coach Josh Carr has quit to take on assistant role with Fremantle

Former Port Adelaide and Fremantle champion Josh Carr is headed back to the AFL, a year after coaching North Adelaide to the SANFL premiership.

North Adelaide coach Josh Carr has quit the Roosters to take on an assistant’s role at Fremantle.

A year after taking the Roosters to premiership glory, Carr told the players on Wednesday night he had accepted an offer to join the Dockers.

Carr had a year remaining on his contract after gaining a two-year extension on his original three-year deal mid-season in 2018.

Roosters chief executive Greg Edwards said while Carr was contracted for the 2020 season, the club would support coaches and players who had an opportunity to go to the next level in their football careers.

“It’s disappointing to be losing a premiership coach, but its even more disappointing to be losing a great person, great friend and someone whose honesty and commitment will always be remembered,” Edwards said.

“Josh was appointed senior coach in 2016 and immediately put in place his vision for success. He was willing to make the hard decisions early on the type of players he wanted, the game style he wanted and the culture we needed to be successful.

“The result of his commitment to the plan was the 2018 premiership. While season 2019 didn’t deliver the same success, Josh had maintained his vision of success and planning for the next premiership was underway.”

Carr informed the Roosters a few weeks ago there had been contact from the Dockers. However, there had been no official offer of a role until this week.

“Upon considering over recent days, Josh and his family have made the decision to take up the position with Fremantle to continue his coaching development and growth in an AFL environment,” Edwards said.

Carr’s record with the Roosters is 27 wins, 48 losses and one draw and he took the club, wooden spooner in 2017, to the flag from fifth spot and the elimination final. The former Port Adelaide champion coached the state team to victory over the WAFL in Perth in May.

The Roosters have already started the process to find a replacement for Carr. Another former Port Adelaide player Jacob Surjan has been Carr’s lieutenant as his assistant and reserves coach.
