List analysis: State of play for Port Adelaide’s out of contract players

Unless something big happens, Power gun Karl Amon is likely to move to one of four big Victorian clubs. But who else could be on their way out of Alberton? Here’s the latest.

Who is safe and who might be getting a little bit nervous about their future at Alberton?

Port Adelaide had a signing splurge at the start of the season, locking away young guns such as Connor Rozee and Zak Butters and established players including Ryan Burton and Dan Houston to name a few.

But there’s still plenty of players still without a contract for next year at the Power.

Who is going to be there in 2023, who will be at a different club next season and who could be in limbo.

Here’s the state of play for the Power’s out of contract players.

Karl Amon

Age: 26 Games played: 118

Unless there is a major change, it seems extremely likely that Amon will leave the Power as a free agent come the end of the season.

Carlton, Hawthorn, St Kilda and Melbourne have all been interested in the wingman, who was in the 40-man All-Australian squad.

Travis Boak

Age: 33 Games played: 321

The Power’s games record holder at AFL level is defying age and will go around another year, and probably more.

He has been playing a little bit more forward at times to allow Rozee and Butters in the midfield but is still shining for the Power.

Martin Frederick

Age: 22 Games played: 14

Has been in and out of the team and has been the sub on a couple of occasions for the Power.

The Next Generation Academy product could have to wait and see how the Power end the season to learn more about his future post this season.

Robbie Gray

Age: 34 Games played: 266

If he wants to go around in 2023, then a deal will get done for the man considered by many to be the Power’s greatest AFL player..

After a couple of weeks out to rest a persistent knee injury Gray has had 21 and 19 disposals in his last two games to show that he still has it.

Lachie Jones

Age: 20 Games played: 19

Talks are progressing over a new contract for the cult hero.

Has found a niche as a pressure forward after coming to Alberton as a hard-nosed defender.

Sam Mayes

Age: 28 Games played: 121 (20 for Power)

Extremely versatile but Mayes hasn’t really been able to get a solid run in the Power side, apart from a stretch in 2021.

Too good for the SANFL, the former Brisbane Lion will have to wait and see if he can get another contract and it could be a nervy one.

Jed McEntee

Age: 21 Games played: 5

The mid-season draftee from 2021 has two unused medical sub stints in his five games “played” for the Power.

Another to have to wait and see how the season goes, it could be 50/50 for the small forward.

Trent McKenzie

Age 30 Games played: 144 (38 for Power)

Was in serious trouble at the end of 2019 but turned his career around over the past two years after he became a key part of the Power’s defence.

Has had some injury problems, and then illness, to only limit him to five games this season but the former Gold Coast Sun will be at Alberton next season.

Jackson Mead

Age: 20 Games played: 9

The son of club great Darren, Mead has broken through for his AFL debut this season and has impressed for the Power.

He will be one of the young guns the Power will look to develop further in 2023.

Steven Motlop

Age: 31 Games played: 217 (82 for Port Adelaide)

Didn’t get a contract until late on last year and could be in trouble this year.

Has only kicked 10 goals from 14 games at AFL level this year and a couple of his games have been extremely quiet.

Jake Pasini

Age: 21 Games played: 0

Cruelly suffered an ACL rupture just when a debut game was in sight for the key defender.

Despite the injury the Power really rate the West Australian and he will be at Alberton next year.

Taj Schofield

Age: 19 Games played: 0

The son of 2004 premiership winner Jarrad, Schofield is another one who will have to wait until the end of the season.

Has been an emergency on several occasions in recent weeks and midfield coach Brett Montgomery has hinted that he is getting close to an AFL debut.

Brynn Teakle

Age: 22 Games played: 1

The mid-season draftee impressed on his debut as Port Adelaide’s ruckman, just 17 days after being selected by the Power, before breaking his collarbone after 35 minutes.

The Power have been extremely impressed by the ruck/forward and a new deal should come soon.
