PATRICK Dangerfield has returned fire after having his toughness questioned by former Port Adelaide player Kane Cornes.

Dangerfield starred in Geelong’s 13.10 (88) to 12.13 (85) win over Hawthorn on Saturday despite playing virtually on one leg.

The Brownlow Medal favourite injured his foot early in the piece and played deep in the forward line, kicking five goals and taking eight marks inside forward 50 to go with his 20 touches.

While there was no shortage of praise for the 27-year-old’s heroic performance, Cornes offered a different point of view.

The Power premiership winner said while at the Crows, Dangerfield was told by teammates he hammed up his injuries a bit.

“He does exaggerate injuries,” Cornes said on the Sunday Footy Show.

“In his time at Adelaide, his teammates had to sit him down and say, ‘Look, you do carry on a little bit with your injuries’ and he does.”

It prompted a stinging reaction from Dangerfield on radio on Monday morning.

“I just laugh at Kane Cornes — that’s all you can do I think,” Dangerfield told KIIS 101.1.

“It’s great we’ve got someone from the Crows’ inner sanctum. No one was as welcome as Kane Cornes in the Adelaide changerooms.

“I don’t think I need to reference his career at times. I’ll leave it at that.

“Surprisingly I never had that conversation. Maybe Kane should do a little bit more research next time.”

GARRY LYON BACKS CORNES’ CALL

While many in the footy world will see Cornes’ sledge as an unwarranted attack after Dangerfield led the Cats to victory, Melbourne legend Garry Lyon stands in support of the ex-Power star, saying Cornes has no reason to fabricate anything.

“It was really strong from Kane and people pot him,” Lyon said on SEN Breakfast.

“I think he is fantastic because he speaks his mind. If he is definitively saying that his teammates at Adelaide said he (Dangerfield) needs to get on with it, then that’s what happened. I don’t think he is making that up.

“What is courage for one player could be different for another. If you walked into the room halfway through the second (quarter) you would have thought it was a bad corky, because when he ran, he went flat out. You wouldn’t have known he was injured when he actually went, it was when he stopped and limped back to the goal square is when he looked in trouble.

“I think he was unbelievable but what is pain for one bloke may not be that much for another.”

Dangerfield’s former Geelong teammate Jimmy Bartel says he never noticed the Moggs Creek local exaggerating injuries when the two played together.

“He genuinely goes hard, all the time flat out,” Bartel said on RSN. “He does get battered around a bit because of the way he plays.

“I never questioned (last year) whether he was hurt or not.

“He got collected in the ribs earlier this year, you could forgive him for staying down a bit couldn’t you?

“Kane must have some very good inside knowledge then from the Crows, if he’s gone with that.”

CORNES-WALKER STOUSH ON FOOTY SHOW

Having transitioned from the footy field into the media, Cornes is rarely gun shy. He was called out for making “s*** comments” by Richmond coach Damien Hardwick last week and Adelaide captain Taylor Walker has joined the chorus.

The pair shared a tense exchange on the Sunday Footy Show yesterday.

Walker: Not a big fan of players that come out of the game and don’t have a positive spin on the game because we all love the game of footy.

Cornes: I think you’re angling for a media position at the end of your career, Tex. It’ll be reasonably boring if you’re all just positive and is it fair to say you don’t necessarily see the positive things that are said about you and your club, and you just focus on negative things which all players do when they’re playing?

Walker: Yeah I always look at the positive things, pretty glass half full, Kane. So (I) like to keep it that way.

When asked by Footy Show panellist Nathan Brown if there was any chance of a reconciliation between the two, Walker didn’t give an answer, leading Billy Brownless to emphatically declare: “That’s a no!”

Pushed if he’d consider catching up with Cornes for a coffee, Walker said: “Coffee inside a boxing ring or something is it?”
