Former Port Adelaide assistant turned GWS mentor Matthew Nicks says Power’s Michael Voss is ‘perfect’ for vacant Carlton role

A week after Michael Voss interviewed for the vacant Carlton coaching post, a rival club’s assistant has called him the ‘perfect’ candidate for the role.

Michael Voss is the “perfect” person to coach Carlton, according to a former colleague turned rival.

Matthew Nicks, who worked with Voss at the Power from 2015-18 before becoming a senior assistant at GWS during the off-season, praised the Brisbane great’s credentials, a week after Voss interviewed for the vacant Blues job.

Nicks also dismissed Port Adelaide president David Koch’s suggestion Voss should focus on his current role and go for the Carlton post at season’s end, saying the former Lions coach would be doing “everything required” to get Port Adelaide up and going each week.

“That’s the way Vossy works — he’s a professional,” Nicks told SEN radio on Thursday, ahead of the Power’s game against the Giants at Adelaide Oval this Saturday night.

“There’s a blessing there from your coach to have a look at the possibility at taking on a new challenge then you’ve got to do that.

“I have no doubt that Vossy’s getting everything done and then some.

“He’s an outstanding coach and he’d be perfect for that Carlton gig.

“Good luck to him and we’ll see how he goes.”

Carlton has been searching for a new coach since sacking Brendon Bolton last month.

Voss, a three-time Brisbane premiership captain, coached the Lions to a 42-64 record in five years in the role before he was sacked in 2013.

He joined the Power for the 2015 campaign.

Nicks’s name had also been discussed as a potential senior coaching candidate but he said he had not been sounded out by Carlton or the other two clubs chasing coaches, St Kilda and North Melbourne.

The former Sydney player said the timing had to be right for him to make the step up.

“I think I am ready, it’s just whether it’s the right time,” he said.

“I feel really confident that it’s something that I’ll need to challenge myself with over the next two or three years.

“I’m in no rush whatsoever.

“I’m six months into a three-year journey up here minimum and I’m really keen to make an impact up here and help them hopefully achieve what most teams are after and get the ultimate by winning a premiership.”

Nicks said he was really looking forward to returning to Adelaide to play the Power.
