STURT’S Casey Voss has further staked his claims to be a Brisbane Lions father-son pick by playing for their reserves team.

Casey – the son of Lions great, and now Port Adelaide assistant, Michael Voss – took time out of his SANFL season to line up in the North East Australian Football League during the school holidays.

The 17-year-old half-back/inside midfielder made his debut for Brisbane’s reserves in their two-point loss to Southport on July 7 then featured again versus Sydney University a week later.

He returned to Adelaide to play in Sturt’s 19-point reserves win against Woodville-West Torrens on Saturday – his fourth game in the Double Blues’ twos this season.

The Lions can nominate Casey as a father-son selection in November’s national draft.

Brisbane development coach Paul Henriksen told lions.com.au the Brisbane father-son academy member impressed at half-back on debut.

“He’s very similar in terms of what he looks like to his dad out there, running around on the ground,” Henriksen said.

“He played with freedom and it was great to see him win the ball, move it quickly, get in position, take marks.

“He’s showed some promise and it was exciting – in fact there was a number of fans down there who just wanted to see him play.

“But he’ll be much better for the run and we’re looking forward to him playing half-back or even moving into the midfield.”

Casey has lived in Adelaide since Michael became Port’s midfield manager in 2015 and has been tracked by Brisbane scouts for several years.

Joining the Lions would be a homecoming for Casey, who grew up around the club during the latter part of Michael’s 289-game playing career and when he was coaching from 2009 to 2013.

Casey also spent a week at the Lions with their other father-son prospects in January.

Sturt under-18 coach David Oatey said Casey had been playing well for the Double Blues.

“Does that mean he’s going to be drafted? Not necessarily,” Oatey said.

“The trip (to Brisbane) was a good opportunity for him and hopefully if he’s played well, he might push his cause for father-son.

“We’d love him to be drafted.”
