AFL draft 2024 indicative order: Every club’s picks revealed

League bosses are still toying with potential changes to draft rules, and when they are implemented, as the season enters its latter stages.
Every team has come out of their mid-season bye, and with every club having played the same number of games, a clearer picture of teams’ ladder positions and draft hands is being painted.
AFL officials, led by general manager of football Laura Kane, have floated the possibility of changes to the bidding system on father-son and NGA selections for the 2024 draft.
Some clubs, including Carlton and Richmond, were proactive trading in future assets last year in an attempt to plan for the future.
The Blues have two father-son selections they are expected to bid on in Ben and Lucas Camporeale, the twin sons of Scott Camporeale.
Brisbane also has access to Levi Ashcroft, the brother of Will and the son of Marcus, through the father-son system, while Gold Coast can match bids on Suns Academy prospect Leonardo Lombard.
With just nine rounds to go before the bottom 10 teams are locked in, we look at every clubs’ draft hand ahead of the 2024 draft.
NORTH MELBOURNE
Current Draft Hand: 1, 21, 39, 57, 72
Currently armed with pick one, North Melbourne also owned picks 19 and 20 but were forced to trade them last year as they were priority picks handed to the Roos by the AFL. All of the picks North Melbourne currently owns were originally theirs, except for pick 72, which is tied to Essendon after a trade with Port Adelaide in 2023.
RICHMOND
Current Draft Hand: 2, 22, 34, 40, 41, 52, 58, 67, 71
Richmond was active in last year’s trade period, trading out of the 2023 draft to acquire more 2024 capital. The plan for the Tigers was to use the bounty of mid-range selections to trade up the order with a side that needs the points to bid of NGA or father-son talents. Pick two could easily become pick one, with the Tigers just four points and 0.5 per cent ahead of North Melbourne, while they are four points and nine per cent behind West Coast in 16th.
WEST COAST
Current Draft Hand: 3, 23, 59
The Eagles traded their 2024 third rounder to Richmond last year to move up from pick 40 to 38 and take Clay Hall, with that third rounder currently slated to be pick 41. The rest of West Coast’s picks are their own.
ADELAIDE
Current Draft Hand: 4, 30, 42, 60
Adelaide moved up the order last year and took Dan Curtin at pick 8, with the move costing the Crows their 2024 second-round pick. But Adelaide moved back into the second round when Shane McAdam was traded to the Demons, with that pick currently slated for 30.
ST KILDA
Current Draft Hand: 5, 33, 48, 55
The Saints traded out their 2024 second rounder in the deal that netted them Liam Henry from Fremantle. But St Kilda moved back into the second round when the Giants traded up one spot to take James Leake. The Saints slid back from pick 17 to pick 18 and took Darcy Wilson, while also getting the Giants’ 2024 second rounder (currently pick 33). St Kilda also moved pick 42 and 50 last year for Melbourne and Carlton’s 2024 third rounders in two separate trades, which are currently 48 and 55.
HAWTHORN
Current Draft Hand: 6, 35
When Hawthorn traded for Jack Ginnivan at the end of 2023, the club traded out its 2024 second and third rounders, and received Collingwood’s 2024 second-round selection back. Currently that trade is looking like the Hawks slid back nine spots, from #26 to #35, and traded #44 for the small forward. They also don’t have a fourth rounder, having traded it to Brisbane in the Jack Gunston move.
GOLD COAST
Current Draft Hand: 7, 8, 20, 27, 29, 54
Gold Coast was one of the busiest clubs in 2023’s trade period in an effort to land all four academy products. In the process, the Suns landed the Western Bulldogs’ 2024 first, currently 8th, one of North Melbourne’s priority picks, currently 20th, and Brisbane’s second, currently 29th. The Suns will perform more trade gymnastics this October in an effort to get good value for academy product Leonardo Lombard, who will likely be a top 10 pick.
BRISBANE
Current Draft Hand: 9, 47, 62, 65
Brisbane currently owns pick 9, however there is a very good chance the Lions will be trading back down the order to maximise value, if father-son prospect Levi Ashcroft nominates the club. The younger brother of Will Ashcroft is also touted as a top five selection in this year’s draft.
MELBOURNE
Current Draft Hand: 10, 38, 43, 46, 66
The Demons gave up their own second-round pick for Shane McAdam, but got back Sydney’s second rounder for Brodie Grundy in separate trades. Melbourne also does not own its third-round pick, with it moving to St Kilda for Jack Billings. But the Demons got the Saints’ 2024 third-round pick in a 2023 draft night move.
FREMANTLE
Current Draft Hand: 11, 14, 15, 25, 61
Fremantle currently owns three first rounders, having landed pick 11 from Port Adelaide in a pick swap, and 15 from Collingwood in the Lachie Schultz move. Fremantle also landed St Kilda’s 2024 second rounder when Liam Henry left the Dockers, and Richmond’s third rounder in a draft-night pick swap. But Richmond owns the Dockers’ second rounder, with the pick moving clubs to the Power in the trade for their first rounder, and then onto Richmond in the move for Ivan Soldo.
GEELONG
Current Draft Hand: 12, 32, 50, 68
Geelong owns all of its own draft selections, and has not brought any picks in for the upcoming draft.
GWS GIANTS
Current Draft Hand: 13, 24, 51, 69
The Giants shifted back from pick eight and 17 last year to pick 11 and 15, while also netting Adelaide’s 2024 second rounder (currently pick 24). But GWS also moved up to take James Leake, costing them pick 33.
ESSENDON
Current Draft Hand: 16, 36
Essendon owns its first two selections, but traded out its third rounder in the complicated four-team trade that got Paddy Dow from Carlton to St Kilda and Nick Coffield from the Saints to the Bulldogs. The Bombers landed Carlton’s 2024 fourth in that deal, which they packaged up with their own fourth rounder and Brandon Zerk-Thatcher to send to Port Adelaide for Xavier Duursma.
CARLTON
Current Draft Hand: 17, 37, 63, 64, 70
Carlton does not own its third-round pick, having shifted it in the Paddy Dow trade. The Blues did trade in Gold Coast, Fremantle and the Western Bulldogs’ fourth-rounders, which was mainly done to match bids on father-son selections Ben and Lucas Camporeale.
SYDNEY
Current Draft Hand: 18, 19, 56, 74
Sydney is armed with two first-round picks, one being their own and the other being one of North Melbourne’s end-of-round priority picks. But the Swans shifted their second-round pick in the deal for Brodie Grundy.
COLLINGWOOD
Current Draft Hand: 26, 44, 53
The Magpies won’t enter the draft until the second night, where they will select at Hawthorn’s pick. Collingwood swapped second rounders with the Hawks, due to the deal for Jack Ginnivan, while also adding an extra third-round pick to their board. But their fourth-round pick belongs to Essendon, having been on-traded by the Hawks in the Massimo D’Ambrosio deal.
WESTERN BULLDOGS
Current Draft Hand: 28, 45
The Bulldogs traded up last year to secure Ryley Sanders, which cost them their first-round pick. They also moved their 2024 third to Melbourne for James Harmes, and their fourth in the deal for Nick Coffield. In the move up for Sanders, the Bulldogs did net Gold Coast’s third rounder, which currently sits at 45: one spot ahead of where their own provisional pick would be.
PORT ADELAIDE
Current Draft Hand: 31, 49, 73
Port Adelaide’s season is stuttering along, and Power fans won’t be pleased with the fact they currently won’t enter the draft until the second round. A 2023 trade bonanza that landed Brandon Zerk-Thatcher, Esava Ratugolea, Jordon Sweet and Ivan Soldo means they have the least-valued draft hand – with the three selections only worth 902 points.
