GEELONG AFLW recruit Sophie Van De Heuvel has set her sights on playing in the Women’s Big Bash League this summer.
Van De Heuvel was chosen by the Cats with pick No.2 in Tuesday’s AFLW draft and the 17-year-old forward from Ballarat hopes she can accomplish another sporting dream before her football debut.

“It’s been pretty crazy this year, just trying to juggle it all, especially with school,” Van De Heuvel said.
“I’ll look to hopefully get a Big Bash contract, but see how that goes
“Fingers crossed I get a contract. I’ll just see how premier cricket goes this year
“(Geelong) is happy for me to play both sports, they’re pretty flexible.”
The Loreto College Year 12 student is part of the formidable Essendon Maribyrnong Park Cricket Club, with teammates including Australian representatives Molly Strano, Elyse Villani and recent debutant Georgia Wareham.
She’s an all-rounder who has opened the batting for Victoria’s under-18 side and has been inspired by her VFLW teammate at Williamstown, Jess Duffin, who played for the Melbourne Renegades in the WBBL and Collingwood AFLW last summer.
“She’s been incredible for me, I’ve learnt a lot from her,” Van De Heuvel said.
“I’ve had a few discussions with her just about juggling both sports, which has been amazing.”
Van De Heuvel is a half-forward but can also play in the midfield. She was touted as a top-five selection, but was shocked to be Geelong’s second pick, behind Nina Morrison.
“It’s a bit of a special moment,” she said.
“I’m really looking forward to the challenge.”
