SA’s oldest university residential college has just purchased a new property in North Adelaide – paid for in full by one generous donor.
Last week, St Mark’s College settled on the historic Cathedral Deanery on Pennington Terrace.
The house was previously the Dean’s residence, and belonged to the Cathedral while being rented out to the college.
But thanks to a large donation made by Dr Pamela Wall, an honorary fellow and widow of former honorary fellow Dr Ian Wall, the college was able to purchase the property outright.
“We are extremely grateful to Dr Wall for making this exciting purchase possible,” college chair Ms Linda Matthews said.
“We could not be more delighted that the college has been able to make this valuable acquisition, which is so important for current and future students,”
The century-old St Mark’s college now owns a total of five 19th century houses, facing the Parklands and Adelaide Oval.
The house is currently occupied by seven students and while the college said that would continue for the “foreseeable future”, it cautioned the property could be “used for other purposes in future years as circumstances evolve”.
“Its use for students has been a great success, and has enabled the college to have the largest enrolment in its history this year, responding to high student demand for college places.”
The house was built in the early 1880s.
The college now boasts an impressive portfolio comprising of the Deanery, Walkley Cottage, Downer House, the Grenfell Price Lodge, and Hawker House.
